Debating if I put stone guards on my orig. Blk. 84 911?
Would you put stone guards on a nice black Carrera?
Anyone have any pics on early (84 or so) 911 preferably black with stone guards. I would love to see what it looks like....

I never cared for the stone guards on a narrow body. I just think they look out of place IMO.

I've got them on my black '84 Targa. The aren't noticeable with the black paint. In my opinion, it doesn't look right with other colors unless the car is a widebody. I'll try to get a photo up later.

No, not on a stock eighties car. Misplaced IMO.

I debated this with my old 86 Carrera and before I decided a rock shot up and took a dime size chunk out of the rear fender paint. They are useful. The car was black so I didnt worry about contrast in color. Sold the car no pics.

Here's another angle. They aren't very noticeable. They probably aren't that functional either. I'd probably leave it alone if my car didn't have them when I bought it.

If you dont have them -are you sure the car hasnt been painted? Ive seen car that havent had them and they will have rock chips there. The only ones Ive seen with out them were definitely painted since new..They appear to do nothing if they are on the car cause there are not any chips there if the guards are in place.. I didnt think they were optional on the wider sc/ carrera flares...I thought they were standard?

Thanks for the pics and comments averyone.
I have heard from some that the mud guards were optional however some others have told me otherwise. I have the wider flares and do not think the car was painted other than a cosmetic fix to the front for chips. Ho ho ho....

David 84,
I made my own stoneguards out of the same material that is used for clear bras. Let me know if you want additional information. Cesar |

The reason I like them is for their intended purpose.
These 911's are stone chip magnets. I've never experienced another vehicle that picked up stone chips so quickly. It's because of their profile on the road for the most part. But also if you put wider than stock wheels up front, even just 7" and are lowered and run neg. camber, look at how much of the tire is not covered by the fender down by the rockers. Then ad sticky rubber to that mix. If the front wheels are pitching it and it sticks out in their line of fire, well. And on a black car you see every one. |

There are 2 stone guard types. Wide for the turbo and narrow for the Carrera's. In Australia most car came with the turbo version but the narrow looks better on the narrow body. Not a lot in it though.
The clear aftermarket versions look like the 964 factory ones I think. Simon

Properly trimmed silver duct tape(3M brand, natch) will look nice on that black paint.. Not for everyone, of course..
