tranny or gear noise need help

I was hoping some one could tell me what noise I am hearing. I have a 79 sc, when I engage any gear and start to move forward I hear what sounds like someone is spinning the wheel of fortune right below the shifter, when the car comes to a stop so does the noise any ideas.

Sorry, being a newbie I will not try to answer your question for fear of being laughed at by the experts here.

Could you provide a bit more info - how is the gear change working ? Clutch ? Any other symptoms ?

At least I bumped you up, others will chime in.

OK, to get more specific with Marcus’ good questions; is the noise related to engine speed or road speed?

When moving and push in the clutch where the engine goes back to idle, what does the noise do while coasting?

As above and you also shift into neutral, what does the noise do?

If you slightly move the shifter, what happens?

Does it change when you free-rev the engine?

Does it change when you lightly apply the brakes?

Does it change when you go around a corner?

Is it temperature dependent? ie, is it there from a cold startup? Is it there when everything is at normal temperature? Any change?

Best,
Grady

THanks for the questions. When the car is coasting the noise gets faster as the car gets faster and the oppisite when I slow down, the noise seems to be there if the car is cold or warm and does not seem to be affected by clutch action. Just sounds like the wheel of fortune the clicking noise gets faster and louder with the speed of the car. hope this helps.

Hello

have a look on the back wheel hub,(not wheel side, back)

See if the hand brake cable is lose. It should fit into a hole.

It done it on my 83sc and had the same sort of noise (ticking from below the gear shift.
It could be that poss good luck

Its not the hand brake itself, try where the cable crosses over the half shaft, jack the car up and spin the wheel, you will see the cable rubbing on the shaft.
If not look at the cable to see if there are any marks on it.
sounds like the same anyway.
good luck.

I agree, check the CV bolts before you drive it again. Here are two good threads.
Reconstructing Constant Velocity (CV) Joints by Pelican rcecale.
and
CV Joints with some good stuff provided by Warren.

If all the CV bolts are tight, look into the parking brake.

Best,
Grady

Zoobsvt, any luck?

I have a WEVO shifter and have the same noise, but if I lean left on the shift it takes some side load off (remember the wevo has springs on each side to center the shifter) it goes away. Never had it before the WEVO. I adjusted it many times, if I clear it up for 1st 2nd then 5th gets noisier, it does not seem have any negative impact. The CVs don't clunk, I am sure I can feel it through the tranny.

It was worse with the WEVO coupler, I have the stock coupler back in which seemed softer on the tranny by giving some play and taking off the load a bit.

Hope this helps. Mine is a later 915 alum case with early gears and posi in a 72 body.

Cliff

Zoobsvt,
If you shift into neutral at speed, do you hear the same noise?

Cliff,
Many aftermarket shift kits (not all ) that spring load the lever end up applying that same spring force on the entire shift linkage. That includes the shift tube and the shift shaft that slides the shift collars back and forth inside the gear box. YMMV, but what you're experiencing are internal vibrations transferring back to the shift lever. I suppose that's why there are vertical tabs on the top carrier plate of the shifter housing for 5th and Rev.; to relieve spring tension while in those gears.

Other than the noise, I'm not sure about any wear ramifications though.
