How to refinish pitted gear shift lever?

I am assuming the shift lever is stainless steel, polished, not chromed. So would I use 400-600 wet dry paper or ultrafine steel wool to remove some dullness and smooth out some pitting? Just metal creme polish wont touch the pitting , Ive got to get down a layer to smooth that out. Thanks. Zed.

Zed, Welcome to the Forum. I’m assuming you are talking about the shift handle between the tunnel and the shift knob. Your ’71 has a chrome plated steel shaft there. You can take a torch to it and bend it to your liking if you want. You can also have it stripped, polished and re-chromed to look like new. No, it isn’t stainless steel. Best, Grady

Zed, That isn’t all bad. This gives you the excuse to disassemble and rehab the shift assembly. Sorta every 30+ year maintenance, hehe. The lock-out plate for 1-R is probably worn. Possibly the shift housing also. Carefully inspect the pin in the housing and the slot in the shift handle. Check the connection at the front of the shift rod in the tunnel. Replace the plastic shift cup, the plastic bushing in the tunnel and the two plastic pieces at the coupler to the transmission shift shaft. Good old 911s deserve some TLC. Best, Grady

Grady, Yes, it was a bit sloppy the little I drove it before the snow arrived but not bad. Would this be the time to consider a Rennsport shifter for this 901 rather than redoing the existing? It comes with a new shift lever
