Got a bit of a handle on my squealing brakes- Thanks Wil!

As posted in an earlier thread where I gave my impressions of some products used in my recent project, I noted that the BHP pads (993 calipers) were unbearably loud.

I took Wil Ferch's advice, and did the following, as well as a modified bedding procedure noted on Rennlist. I'll still call Tim the owner of BHP on Tuesday at his request, and see if he adds anything.

I tried Wil's suggestion on the chamfer around the pad edges, and put the slightest amount of anti-seize on the 3 outer edges of the pad that slide in the caliper. I then did the numerous agressive runs in second gear, and then hosed the brakes off. The level of squealing is DRAMTICALLY reduced. For a non-daily driver, and overall fun/track car, it seems acceptable at this time.

Over on Renn, it's noted by some others that BHP acknowledged they have this noise issue on 993 and 993T calipers only, and were/are going to change the backing of the pads.

Ed:

I'm glad this has worked for you so far...

The one point I mentioned seems to be the really big kicker... the anti-squeel plastic/aluminum sheet that sticks to the backside of the pad, the "puck" eats into this sheet a small amount, and acts as a damper.

Looks like ( at the current stage you're at)..this wasn't yet done. I would suggest adding this sheet as perhaps the single most important step, next to chamfering the edges. It's hard to separate the effect of all these steps, I usually do them all ( chamfer the edges, anti-squeel sheet on backside..anti-seize on the three contact surface "edges" of the backing plate).

- Wil

Wil:

I'm going to track some of the backing stuff down this week. I went with what I could do today. Thanks.

I thought everyone chamfered the leading edge of pads. When did this start being overlooked?

Note: I just checked Pelican's Tech articles and it's not mentioned there, so I guess it's not that well known that this greatly helps pads from squealing as long as the rotors are not glazed.

Ed, Swing by and I will hook you up with some great anti seize! It has a service temp up tp 2200F and won't stain - it doesn't contain any Cu or Ni - but is based on an Al Complex and Calcium. It is white and non-toxic. Used in all sorts of nasty environs.

Kinda hurt you didn't ask...

Shoot Mike, I wasn't thinking. I had some regular Permatex on hand and went with that for now. I have to take the car over to Ruf tomorrow to get the alignment done, and didn't want to squeak all the way over there....

I'll try your stuff out when I get the car back. Thanks!
