All, I just completed a clutch upgrade to my G50. While it's still in process, there are many small details to doing this that are easily overlooked. For instance, even though my car had the shifter fork upgrade, this had gone bad(40K miles). I have now installed the upgrade of the upgrade. I have laso installed a Kennedy Engineering pressure plate( excellent product!)
My question is, would there be interest in a G50 FAQ website with this kind of info? I know that there is an abundance of info out there for the 915 yet there is not much out there for the G50, especially the '87-'89 model years. Cheers, James

I would definitely be interested. My car's mileage is low enough that I haven't had to deal with this 'yet'...but I will

Ok, I will start compiling some of my info. and post a url to this thread soon. If anyone else has some experiences etc. they would like to see, let me know. So far this is what I will cover:
1. G50 shifter fork updates. 2. Clutch options. 3. LSD options. 4. Gearing charts/options. 5. Later on, How to's with pictures. Once again, if anyone else has any other ideas or suggestions, please let me know and I will incorporate them into the page. Cheers, James

That is an excellent idea, and one which I believe will find much support on this forum! Most of the info seems to be for the 915. I posted a recent question on G50 shift improvements and the info that was freely given by guys on this board (KTL!) would be really great if captured into a FAQ.

Great idea! Make sure you include info on the possibility of breaking off the housing "ear" when removing the shift fork rod.
I'd never heard of this until I removed mine a couple months ago and broke the ear off.

All, Thanks for the encouragement. if any of you have any other suggestions to add to the list I posted in my previous post, Let me know.
NicolasW, If you can host let me know what format you would like the pages in. Please feel free to pm me to let me know. Richard, If you already have a document that would be great! I have many pictures I have taken so folks can see the differences in parts etc as well as having a visual reference. once again, thanks for the help and encouragement and I'll get this put together ASAP. Cheers, James

I have submitted to Wayne a tech article on the G50 clutch replacement. However it has not been posted. If anyone wants a copy sent to them, just send me a note

I think you mean clutch release fork for #1 above? Didn't know there were any trans. shift fork issues. It'd be nice to have all the info. in one place, no doubt. If everyone chimes in with their experiences and knowledge of parts, repairs, upgrades, do's & don't's, etc., I think we could put together a pretty solid topic about the basic service on early G50 transaxles.

Nothing of which i'm aware.
I can add something though. Limited slip differentials were mentioned as a topic that more would like to know about for the G50. Here's what little i've learned. There are not as many choices as a for 915, but there's a few. You can chose the Torsen-style torque-biasing differential (worm gears- no friction discs) or you can use a clutch pack-style, which is the more common limited slip unit. Torque biasing, that I know of, can be either Quaife brand or Guard brand. Guard are said to be some of the best diffs one can buy. As an aside, The 968 car was actually offered by Porsche from the factory with a real Torsen-named (made by Zexel) LSD. This might fit an early G50 too, since most of the G50 diffs are interchangeable. More on that in a second. The Zexel is supposedly sold out (NLA) and now the factory replacement is a 40% clutch pack LSD. The most common clutch pack G50 LSDs are factory ZF or Guard brand. It seems that all of the 5-speed G50 (911 and 964) diffs are interchangeable, and some of the 993 diffs. The 993 (6-speed) models depend on whether the diff has the necessary three holes to accept the 5 speed's magnetic speedo ring. But the 993 diffs are supposed to be junk in many ways. Most importantly, they had poor friction discs (and some had 2 discs instead of 4) that wear out VERY quickly. VERY. The poor discs do not use the preferred plasma-sprayed type of friction material and therefore wear out much, much too soon. Actually many of the factory Porsche LSDs are said to have friction discs with the poor material that wears out quickly, rendering the car to being almost similar to that with an open diff. ![]() Guard brand are the hot setup. My basis for this statement is that the people who buy the GT3R cars swap out the factory installed Porsche Motorsports diff for a Guard chromoly unit. Must be something good about them? ![]() wevoid and Geary are the guys around here who know the ins and outs of the G50 diffs.

Count me in. My car had a new clutch about 50K ago but I drive pretty hard. Only a matter of time. My car has the fork upgrade but that's all I could tell you about it.

Hey Fellas' sorry for the delay. When I originally posted this I was unemployed. Now I'm in the process of getting my fabrication business off the ground. I have a bunch of photos and knowledge that I would be more than happy to download to someone if they want to put it up somewhere so folks can benefit from it.
Cheers, James
