'72 911T Katrina flood car
For those of you who don't know, Copart, a major auction house for wrecked or damaged cars is doing most of the insurance salvage on the gulf coast for Katrina flood vehicles. Today, Howard and I bid on a 72 T Euro coupe which was wrongly listed as a Turbo. It was one of his customer's cars which was totally inundated with Katrina salt water. This car ran before the storm, was stock basically, had an aftermarket tail and wheels and was swamped by the hurricane. We figured it would be safe to bid up to $2500, based on what we are seeing 72's going for these days. We had knowledge of this car, it was not too terribly rusty, although we had no idea of what happened after four months of sitting after the flood. The paint was poor with primer spots. It need a total going through to make it worth something, good shell to begin with, but after the storm, who knows. The car sold for $7800 or possibly more as I didn't see the final bid. Am I crazy here, or are the people who bought it crazy? Howard thinks that someone may have thought this was actually a Turbo and bought it thinking such. I am wondering if a totally swamped marginal vehicle goes for that much, how is the market for the early cars going to be a few years from now. The owner received less than what the car sold for! I'd be pissed!

I think $2500. would have been the upper limit. Four months of salt water in spots where it shouldn't be can't be good.

Once the owner sees the car and it's NOT aTurbo he'll back out of the deal, since the car was listed incorrectly.
I've been to car auctions and it's like eBay. Every Tom Dick and Harry is out there bidding thinking that they got a great deal when if they looked around they could have gotten a better deal. That is why I never buy a car at auction. My current PORSCHE was brought on eBay, but I saw the car in person and gave the seller an offer if he would end the auction. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush and he accepted my offer. The only other bidder on the car was PISS when the auction ended early. |

I looked at two Katrina "Karreras" in storage here Jackson, Miss...they were nasty and dinged up but both appeared to float in the storm surge; i.e., very little water got into the floorboards and apparently none in the dash. Tried to get the auction house to sell them but they were headed for the left coast....

With a regular engine Inline 4 or 6 or V6 or V8, the engine is usually high enough above the exhaust that water entering the exhaust will not enter the engine, but with the boxer engine configuration it doesn't take too much effort for water to find its way into the engine. |

One of them appeared to have an engine with substantial water in it, the other actually fired and ran....so you Cali guys watch out for a silver 87 or a blue 84 from the Mississippi gulfcoast

I thought the insurance companies chop these cars up and dispose of them to avoid these kinds of cars getting on the market.

I've been told even if the car starts and seems to run fine. It's only a matter of time until all the electrical wiring rots out. I would say they were crazy to offer that much.

Much damage occurs with the electrical charge of the battery and the salt water. I don't know the scientific name, electrolisis or something, but it ain't good for the wiring. Most clutches and auto trans clutches get rotted by the water and fall apart.

Are you sure it got bid up that high? Isn't that the ACV, meaning the insurance company insured it for that much?
