Started MegaSquirtn’ Tonight

This evening I completed the conversion from CIS to the MS FI in my 1980 SC. What a great feeling to say good-bye to the old FI and start the car with the Bitz Racing system.
The conversion required a couple of additional steps that Tony helped me work through via email and phone calls.
The first try to start the car after the installation was a failure. I downloaded the starting attempts into the laptop and emailed the data to Tony. He observed that the MS was not detecting a spark signal. Using his troubleshooting advice I found that the car would run with the tach adaptor bypassed. This caused Tony to send a new tach adaptor. The replacement adaptor would not work, Tony suggested that either the Bosch CDI or the coil was bad. I replaced the coil with a MSD Blaster. As it turned out, the car had the original coil and the MS computer could not detect the weak spark. The engine started with the new coil and the tach adaptor but backfired on the right cylinder bank. Apparently the new coil caused the original ignition wires fail. Fortunately I had a set of Clewett wires in reserve so I replaced the original set. The car started and runs very smooth and will only improve with additional tuning.
My thanks to Tony and his Bitz Racing MS FI kit!

Next...EDIS

I'm in the final steps also and was wondering about what did you do with the two original coil wires? Hopefully I will start mine tomorrow.

EPorsche,
You are at Pope? I am on the JSOC compound. We should compare notes.

I'm at Pope. You guys surround my unit. My car is at the auto hobby shop on Pope. I will be there tomorrow between 0900-0930. I'll PM you with my cell. What did you do with the wire to the coil?

Hi Jim,
I'm very interested in how you did this...how are you handling IAC (cold start)? Are you using the standard CIS valve, or something else?

I picked up a spare throttle body today...I couldn't resist...its off a Ford Falcon EF, has the same diameter as the SC (60mm is plenty of air), and has both an integrated throttle position sensor and integrated IAC valve. the bolt pattern is very close too...just need to widen the pattern a mm on each bolt. Even the throttle linkage lines up!

What will you be using to trigger your EDIS? I mounted a 36-1 wheel to the front of the crank pulley and mounted the sensor off the engine mount brace. I also picked up 2 EDIS-6 coils and 2 EDIS-6 sensors (am twin-plugged.)

Any other details you can share?

Did/are you doing any before/after dyno tests?

Hi Anthony,
If that question was for me, then no. The engine I am building was assembled from parts off the shelf, so there was no "before" to test.

The question was for Jim or anyone who has done before/after on a stock SC. I'm really curious to see if switching from CIS to EFI will free up horsepower. There used to be dyno tests on Bitz's page that were from from an SC but it had an early exhaust system.

Hi I have just completed the M/S fit to a Euro litre. Dyno before was 110Kw now I've got 120Kw.
The only problem that I am having is the car will not restart after stalling without disconnecting the computer first.
Regards,
Richard

Jim,

Good to hear your happy with the kit.

Richard,

You shouldn't have to do this. Note during cranking the MS is adding extra fuel to get the engine started. If the engine stalled due to too much fuel (flooding) this will aggrevate the situation. Try holding the pedal all the way down to draw extra air in to help start a flooded situation. Email me directly if you have any questions. ( I assume your related to Robbie?)

Cheers,

Tony , any plans on making a CIS2EFI kit for the waterpumping Porsches? 924 & 928 ? ( the 944 allready has efi, so i guess that one doesn't need much of a kit )

I just ordered my EFI kit, for my 2.7RS like engine, from Tbitz. I am using ITB's and after I get that running well with my MSD/conventional distributor ignition, will be changing to EDIS crankfire. I've got all the parts on the bench. Let's keep each other up to date on progress.

Regards,

Al
