quick roll bar question
i/m getting ready to install my roll bar and was just wondering what the consensus was on the best way to mount it:
a) bolt and double nut through the metal b) bolt and double nut with backing plates held in place by the bolts c)weld the backing plates to the car d)support plates on both sides of the metal - welded on e)support plates on both sides of the metal - held fixed with the mounting bolts thanks -felix

Unless you have a Das style hoop, it will usually come with plates pre-drilled for bolting up as well as plates for the underside and enough nuts to double nut.

What type of bar is it? What are your plans for the car-are you going to pull it out very often, is there racing class rules you need to worry about
etc.... Cheers

bought it used so the plates for the underneath i will have to make myself. best guess is that it is a safety devices bar although this couldn/t be varified. the car will just be used for d/e in the comming year but if i wanted to go to a full cage in the time to come i would like not having to do a lot of grinding and cutting. will it be a safety issue if i do not weld the plates to the underside of the car?

I would suggest that you follow the manufacture's installation instructions. Who is the manufacture?
I Just installed an Autopower in and used the backing plates that came with the rollbar. Also bought new nuts, bolts, and washers (grade5) to replace the used ones. Crude picture but this is how I did it ![]()

![]() And the back feet like this: ![]() If this is how your feet look like, you indeed have a Safety Devices roll bar. Then you just give the guys at Stable Energies http://stable-energies.com/ a call. They will sell you a complete installation kit. This will include weld in nut plates for the front and backing plates for the back. It will also include all the hardware (bolts and nuts) that are needed. This will run you $75, well worth the money. This is how the nut plates are welded in: ![]() And this is how your installed front will look. ![]() You will have to drill three 1" holes into your sills to clear the weded nuts on the back of the nut plates. Let us know if you indeed have a Safety Devices bar and if you need any more help! I forgot, the SD bar also has a model number on there. It starts with P if I remember right. You can find a lot of info aobut SD bars if you search for my handle and 1fastredsc. The first picture I have posted in this thread is from his install, the others are from mine. I had installed a used bar too, and had to make front feet on top of buying the installation kit from Stable Energies. George Last edited by aigel; 01-14-2006 at 07:13 PM.. |

good call aigel- compared the mounting feet and it is a das bar. rough fit it this morning but it looks like it will need some coaxing to get it to fit right. will let you know how it goes. i guess i won/t need any aditional support plates as it is mounting into pre-existing points.
thanks again.

You should find DAS bar info here as well if you do a search. I helped install a used one in my buddies car. It only went in if you bolted it in a certain order and pushed and pulled on the feet to lign them up with the holes.
While bars are built to fit a certain car on a jig, they will always move from welding and the cars are also all a slight bit different. Make sure you use the right grade hardware! My buddy bought eye bolts etc. at EBS www.ebsracing.com George |

i know that there is a detailed tech article on the installation of a das roll bar but i just thought someone might like to see pics of it installed beneath the carpet as it seems most people just install on top of everything. a little bit of a pain getting the carpet back in around the bar but well worth it in my oppinion.
