Help with Euro H4s
I bought some Euro H4s ( with vacuum leveling controls). When I tried to put them in my 1980 930 ( obviously a Euro model) there is not enough room behind the light to install them. Has anyone had this problem?? What should I do?? I'm thinking of dremel tooling out a hole to accomodate this ??
Suggestions? Todd

Let me clarify....you mean after plugging the connector into the bulb, the connector is hitting the back of the bucket?

The problem is the levelors on the back of the lights take up too much space to fit in the openings for the lights .. I'll try to take some pics in the morning and post..

the adj. screws (one long & one short) on the sides of the H4's will, on some buckets, not clear one of the 4 spot welded tabs that hold the DOT (US) style sealed beam headlights in place...I've had to bend one tab over slightlly to get the H4's to go in....are these screws the "levelers" you are referring to ???

Maybe this will clear up my problem.
Here's my buckets ![]() And here are the H4s with the vacuum levelors on them. ![]() So my question is, can I remove the bucket and cut a hole out to make room? Other suggestions ?? T

Obviously it isn't even close to fitting. The choices left are to hack a hole in the car, hack off the vacuum canister, or to give up and get the normal Euro H4s that are designed for the car.
I'm not sure why you would need to adjust the lights more then once. It isn't like you are going be loading the car with a trailer or something that would require regular readjustments.

Actually everyone I've spoken to that have had them or used them, claim they are really great. Even the difference between a full and empty tank of gas makes a difference .
So the question is, does the bucket come out so I can work on it? if so how?

Nope! The bucket was formed when the fender was stamped out! Time for Sawzall and Dremel ...
If you hold the lamp assembly out in front of the bucket and imagine the rearward projection of a disk 1/2" larger in diameter than the vacuum module onto the bucket to give some installation ccclearance and working room ... it looks like the may not even be enough room under the right edge of the fender for that contraption ...

Hold the saw!
The responses to Todd's question remind me of a well known (and knowledgable) parts vender's answer to my friend Moe's question about his 4 speed 915 - they told him there was no such thing as a 4sp 915. Let me dig up some more info for you Todd. -Chris

I like that gizmo only because it IS the ultimate gizmo.
Headlight buckets are removeable (spot welds) and I would think more easily worked on out of the fender. This is not going to be one of those "easy" projects. The major pitfall, as I see it, is water coming into the bucket from the tire, Porsche went to great lengths to keep the water out of the original ass'y (talking aobut the stock lights). ![]() ![]() I wish the last page had a better picture of the headlight bucket. I can loan you my manometer if you need to check the vacuum. -Chris

Sounds like a Saturday project at your garage Chris!!! Think I'll put the engine in first...
Oh and by the way Quicksilver,, living in Orange County you obviosly can't see the advantage of going home on a foggy night with an empty tank of gas and two fat girls in the back seat. Think how nice it would be to point the headlights down!!!

The feature is very nice....
Every one of the three rental VW's I had ( all different models) in Germany on "my assignment" ( as some of you know)...had an adjustment feature. The newer VW's used a thumb-wheel on the dash...and I could hear a small servo motor churning to adjust up/down a few degrees. It helps with fuel / cargo load issues , as well as the kind of surroundings you have at the time ( foggy forest at night or a long Autobahn run in the clear). - Wil
