CIS Question (dumb)
'74 2.7L CIS
Immediately to the left of the CIS FD head, there is a heavy wire piece (2 or so inches long) with a loop on the top. This wire sits in the FD body between the FD head and the air intake boot. I can't find any reference as to what this is or it's purpose but feel very confident someone on the board can enlighten me. it is part #45 in this diagram: http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/1974-75/2-3-1.JPG thanks, Jack

It is just a wire piece with a rubber plug on the end that covers the mixture adjustment screw.

While I have never seen the item described, but i have heard the folklore that it does exist, much as hobbits exist and unbroken 914 plastic fuse panel covers.
There is a hole in the top of the fuel distributer that is used to adjust the fuel mixture with a 3mm hex wrench. As the fairy tale goes, there was a rubber plug with a wire on it installed from the factory into this liitle hole. The purpose was to keep unfiltered air from entering said hole. Now back to reality, all the CIS equiped engines i have studied or worked on either had nothing in this hole, or maybe a golf tee. Sooooo..... some folks actually beleive the plug with wire exists, but most of us chock that up to the tooth fairy or santa claus. You can tell us you have one but i still don't buy it. Maybe if you supplied a picture of this ellusive, almost unicorn type of item........ ![]() I'm not sure if I need one more beer or if I have had one too many. thanks for the responses. I should have been able to figure that out. There is a picture on the referenced site under testing air/fuel ratio that shows / explains this. I just wasn't connecting the two.
Sammyg2: I had no idea I possessed such a mythical part, perhaps Gandalf smiled upon this mere 911 of mine... I will film this part asap and post for the non-believers to gaze upon... Within the greater scheme of things, one to few or two three more beers will matter little..... http://members.rennlist.com/jimwms/CIS/CIShome.html ![]()

Keeping that (or a relacement) tool in place prevents sound pad particles and other dirt from clogging the slot in the mixture adjusting screw.

Mine has/had this part. I removed it to make the adjustment and it is on my work bench. I would bet this is how most of them found their way into folklore. I will reinstall tonight when I get home.

These plugs came with many different Bosch CIS systems; you'll find them on old Volvos, etc.
I keep mine to plug the hole; it is secured with a little chain so it won't get lost.

Apparently Gunter has the right idea, secure it with a small chain.

I actually took the pictures a few months ago to ask here what the hell it was!! I always read that it should be a hole there for an allen wrench but I had some form of built in adjuster...
Well, now I know better. ![]() ![]()
