Fuel Distributors.....Why the crazy range in prices for rebuilts
I have replaced every CIS component in my 1973.5T/CIS besides the fuel distributor and may have to change out my old unit. As I research rebuilt units (new units are no longer available for this model), I am finding the costs run the gamut. It appears that the Bosch factory rebuilt units are going for over 1k; however, several parts houses and rebuilders are more in the $400-$500 range. All with a 1-year warranty!
Just what is involved in the rebuild? How can this dollar range be so wide? I figure my pressure issues may be deterioration of seals, but whats so tough about cleaning, resealing and resetting these units that justify that kind of high dollar? Anyone buy a rebuilt unit in the lower price range that they are totally satisfied with and will pass on the vendors name? Appreciate it Bob 73.5T |

About two years ago I found a place in CA that was going to rebuild mine for $200. I did not get around to sending in the unit for two months. I called them to confirm the price and they raised the price to $450. I asked why and was told that it was the going rate. I purchased a used one on this board and never got mine rebuilt. Most will tell you rebuilding them yourself is not an option. I don't think the glue that is used to seal the unit is something common. I did several searches and found threads where others had tried to rebuild them and I decided it was better to just buy a used on.

1973.5T fuel distributor is unique to that year. I do not believe the distrbutors for the 2.7's or the SC's are compatible.
I did do more research and found that $450-$495 was the average going rate for a rebuild. Warantees ran 1 to 2 years, the same as the Bosch rebuilts for $500 more! I was advised to stay away from Python!! Bob |

I can't confirm the 82 distributor will fit your application (will ask my guy tonight when he's over the shop, maybe someone here can) but I do know some club racers in historics occasionally run "cheater" cars by installing newer CIS on older cars. I'm not sure if this only works if you replace the entire assembly, or if replacing the reg only will work.

Sealing the FD can be a prob. It seems like only Bosch can properly seal them. In an old thread some pelicanhead posted that these so called rebuilders only clean them out as to avoid deep 6ing a rebuild because of a leak.
