Oil Level Gauge

Can anyone explain how the oil level gauge works on a 993? I read the manual, and it says to sit at idle, engine warm, to get a reading, but mine sits down in the red. I've checked the oil level, it's mid way up on the twisted section. I checked while idling, level, engine warm....The manual shows a check for the gauge, did that, don't think it's the gauge. Is there a sending unit I can check? Just ignore it and keep checking the dip stick?
Appreciate any advice,
Thanks

If it doesnt leak, it must be out of oil !

Try driving the car for 15 minutes then sitting at idle- should go up. The car really must be warm- not on for a few minutes- the gauges are often inaccurate- always use the dipstick even icf your gauge shows ok-

Thanks, I'll keep checking it with the dipstick. I'm old school anyway, I'm amazed by this engine, not a single drip of oil on the floor after a hard 300 mile run....

Let the engine get hot, not warm. Check when idleing on an even surface.

Float gauge on the side of the oil tank behind the RR wheel.

I have found that the engine has to be really hot for the guage to work. When it is totally warmed up the guage reads accurate only at idle. The difference between the low and the high level is about 1.25 quarts. I drive the car till it shows less than half and then check the dip stick and it usually shows half way between the marks. I add about a quart at that time.

That guage is kind of dumb.

It's a float gauge, and it's measuring the level in the tank while the tank is (both) actively draining and being refilled. Understandably, it's very sensitive to oil temperature. Always trust the dipstick more than the gauge, and remember to check it after you've driven the car, not before, so you know you're up to operating temperature.
