Info from engine numbers

Is there some place I can look up what the numbers on my engine mean. Horsepower, compression, year? The number is *64100086*.

Should be standard US SC (80 to 81), 930/16, 180 hp, 9.3:1 according to the "Red Book".

Guenter this is what I know about the engine. It's a 88 3.2 930/25. It is supose to be a euro version with high compression 10.3 but I can't find anything to verify this. I have 930/25 with number 64100086 stamped on my case. I saw the reference to the 80/81 but I have one more number and it's a 930/25. Does the red book have a euro section? The US version for the 88 925/30 has a letter in the number. example 64J00001. From what I can see years 82 and after all had a letter in there engine numbers.

PJ,

A Euro engine from 1988 shows to be a 930/20, with a serial number starting 63J00001. A 930/25 shows to be a US/Austria/Swiss/Japan/FRG (cat)/Australia engine with a serial number that starts with 64J00001. Are you sure the 1 in your serial number isn't a poorly stamped J? For what it's worth, a 930/25 could be had in some countries in Europe, as cars with a catalyst became either mandatory or desirable for the politically correct. In any event, a 930/25 will have the lower compression ratio, wherever it came from.

Hope this helps,
JR

JR thanks for the info. Will look to see if that's a J when I get home. The engine is from Germany and he said it is a high compression engine. I had him confirm a second time that it is a high compression and he said it was. This is from someone that is well respected on the board. Is there any 930/25 configuration that would have a high compression?

Not that I am aware of. I don't have a spec book handy for 1988 but for 1987, the first year of the 930/25, it's got 9.5:1 compression. I doubt that any of them have higher compression than that. The engine was available in German market cars with option M298, which was "prepared for unleaded fuel" and presumably also meant it was fitted with a catalyst. If you didn't want a cat, the'd just sell you a car with a 930/20. It's only a 14hp difference between the two.

JR here is the note he sent me.

The 930/20 Engine is only the early Version to 1986 ,cars here did not have Cat than , in 1987 the Engines were changed to 930/25 and have a high Compression Euro version . The Engine was rated at 217 with Cat and 231 without Cat . So a newer Euro version , it is called 930/25 and is a high Compression version .

I have talked to a couple other people that have told me that they thought that 930/20 went through 89 but they have no proof. Some say it depended on what part of europe you were in. It looks like your info is somewhat saying the same thing that the 930/20 was still around in 87. Do you think what he is saying has any merit?

The 930/20 was most definitely still around in 1987 and through 1989 as well. I have to believe that there was only one version of the 930/25, as far as internal components is concerned. There may have been small differences to things like the muffler or engine control unit for certain markets but that's it. I checked PET and there are different part numbers for pistons for the 930/20 and 930/26 which produced 231hp and the 930/25 which produced 217hp. In general, when Porsche changes something as basic as a compression ratio, they change the type number.

The reason they used the 930/25 in some markets in Europe was because they wanted to offer an engine to those people that wanted to use unleaded fuel and catalytic converters and Europe was slow in getting super unleaded gas in widespread distribution in many countries.

I have no idea what the seller of your engine is thinking but I know what I can read in the Porsche spec books and parts information.
