How do you guys like larger tires up front? (>205's)

When I put my HRE's on, which are shod with 225/245's, I definitely felt the difference in the way the front end feels. You feel more of the "character" of the road your drving on. I'm not sure I like it.

The 245's in back are fine, but I'm wondering if 215's may be the way to go, or stick with 205's? Does this spread in sizes from the front to the rear do anything adverse to the handling?

Yes you feel more of the road, but I've never characterized this as a "bad" thing. Currently running 225/245 on fuchs and 235/255 on Fikses. I don't thnk the extra 10mm of width going from 205 to 215 is going to make that much difference in 95% of most driving, so I'd say its more for looks.

Ed,

I run 205/245 on 7/9 16" Fuchs. I would run a bigger size up front but I am having a clearance issue. Even with rolled fender lips.

With my car's setup, 205's induce too much understeer.

I like 225's in front much better.

I run 255s on the front of the widebody, some folks run 275s. Steering becomes heavy when driving slow. Entire car feels heavy with large tires all around, that is until you hit a hard corner, then it's all good.

You have more contact with the road. Don't you want that? If you think of it, all that connects your car to the road are 4 spots the size of your palm. I'd be happy to increase that area any chance I get.

I run 225/225 at the track (due to tire choices in R compound for 15") and like the fact that it grips real well in the front.

Hmmmm....maybe that''s the difference, I've not had the chance to run at speed to see the benefit of the added width. What bugs me on the street is the heavy feeling.

I know now what you mean. Especially at parking lot speeds that's true. No worries though, you will like them in your favorite 90 mph sweeper! And that's what you worry about, not the mall parking lot!

Ran 225/245 on 8/9's on the street. Now run 245/275 on 8.5/10's the track. There is no compromise for more rubber. Take the wifes car to the mall. Its all about grip.

Alright, enuf jokes about the forearms and the mall.

I can make an observation, can't I? The fact is that on the road, the car drives differently, and doesn't feel as nimble. I really hadn't projected my mind to imagine it at speed on the track.

You may have an easier time turning the wheel with 205s but the 225s will more likely get you where you are pointing. There is nothing wrong with running 205s on the street and 225s on the track. That's what I am doing! So far I have not felt the need to spend big bucks on 7 and 8s for looks on the street. I never drive over 50% on the street anyway. That's what track days are for. One ticket pays for more than one DE!

She'll become more nimble with the 225's when you toss her into a hard turn...... 225/245's on 7"/9" Fuchs

1983 SC with 16 Fuchs 7/8, using Bridgestone P zeros on all 4 corners

I am running 245s in the rear. no problems.
I promoted my 7s to the front with 75% worn 225s. I have some left side rubbing issues against the fender lip. The fender lips are NOT rolled.

When I replace the front 225s, I plan to go 215s..

I do not track the car but I do like the new stance and handling better then the standard 6/7 205/225s.

I thought that I had heard that the best Fuchs to use up front with 225's were the 8's that were made for the 944 Turbo. The offset would allow them to fit up front, no problem. True?

Mookster:

You can add some camber to cure the rubbing if you don't want to roll.

Most people manage but the +23.3ET is a little low for best fit. +25 to +31 works better.

I would want 7 & 9 205/55//245/45 for street and 8 & 9 225/50//245/45 for track

the extra inch at both ends pays off only at a track, where it pays off big.

I find that weekend warriors that change tires on STREET cars defeat the MAIN purpose of AX and DE....WHY the FUCH would you CHANGE the major ingredient on your car?

Isn't the purpose of AX and DE to take your ride to a higher level in a safer (than the street) environment and to learn how your ride reacts???? Changing tires...sizes or compound ...makes the ride react differently......why would you want it different?

I get a kick out of kicking butt on a guy running a street ride with Hoosiers or some other race compound with my street tires with a same class car......it's priceless....

90% of the AX drivers can't take their rides to the edge and race tires ain't gonna help.....

Just my $.02....
