Thumbs down Noah's new guidelines ?

Noah
Please reconsider the new guidelines for the cars for sale bb. I for one learned a lot from reading the questions and replies from the many people on this board . I realize there was a growing problem with people not following the rules so why not suspend the culprits and let the rest of us go on enjoying the board as it was . As it is now it's just another classified section and one more thing , Noah what a dirty trick , in your sticky you ask for opinion's on this matter but we are blocked from replying . Kind of like putting a kid in a round room and telling him to sit in a corner . Anyone else have any thoughts on this ?

Prolly gonna do it to the parts4sale BBS too. Wait and see. I hear bandwidth is a problem. We don't understand the costs of running this little show for free. Me thinks it's in the $1000's per month.

Oh well, I liked it. It allowed folks to ask questions not everyone had thought of. You could suspend peoples privlidges if they broke the rules.
Of course, everyone would have to be treated the same which would be a change...... (not at shot at Noah)

Cheers

Easy now, it was just a suggestion, relax man! I was not talking about "interesting questions" but a friend of mine who is in the market who does not know a whole lot about 911's always read the questions to help him decide if he should proceed further, then he called the seller. These boards are frequented because they are filled with people helping other people. In the case of my freind, that was excactly what was happenning.........

cheers

Noah,
I am with you on this one

In the short time I have been on this forum I have seen the "classifieds" get ugly!!

It starts out a guy wants to sell his car, then gets ridiculed, abused, degraded, etc.

And talk about some of the insulting offers I have seen. I am suprised the original poster hadn't shot himself or someone else afterwards.

Anyone who wants info can always contact the seller directly to answer questions.

no need for it here.

With no intentions of being disrespectful:
After reading the new guidlines sticky note, I believe that it may have been more appropriate to post the question, wait for responses, and then act accordingly.

While I haven't any notion of what Noah, or any of the other moderators go through controlling this board, the notification struck me more like a cop firing his weapon, and then yelling, "STOP"!

No disrespect intended, just stating an opinion.

I think it was a good move. The classifieds had just become ugly. I am considering selling my 911 soon, and I was not going to post it here for that reason. Now, I might give it a shot.

I liked the question/answer format of the classifieds. It was very informative seeing others questions and answers. Sometimes things got out of hand, but i think the net benefits outweighed the drawbacks, IMO of course.

I was only joking about the " dirty trick " . Sorry if I offended you . I understand your reasons for the change and yes I do go to the tech forum daily but I also learned a lot from the Porsches for sale forum . I've been amazed how fast some of the members can find something odd about a car just from the picture that I probably never would have caught or some of the questions about small details . All good things must come to an end and I guess this is one them .

Where did Noah pose any questions? It seems to me he simply said here is the new rule, if you don't like it feel free to send me your comments.

P.S. I agree with the rule, if you want to sell a car just give a complete description and let people contact each other directly.

I appreciate the moderators’ time and efforts here, but I don't like the new rule at all. For a bunch of reasons.

The Q&As are a great learning tool, to read the questions and answers on a particular car. Different from the tech board, you learn the questions to ask and things to look for if you are a buyer. And you learn the proper way to answer if you are a seller. I’ve learned a hundred things reading the for sale board, stuff I never would have learned reading the tech board.

It's going to make it a dead board, with only the original for sale posting and maybe a few bumps. The interesting cars get lots of hits and comments. Now we have to look through each posting individually, and they are going to fall away fast. There's a part of the community in the commentary, you know where the "buzz" is.

The sellers are going to have to field the same questions over and over.

The buyers are going to have a harder time getting answers. Lots and lots of email traffic, missed connections. Then, the sellers are probably going post the questions anyway, thinking that it will both bump and relieve them of further emails.

Maybe they should bring 1 or 2 more mods to that forum to police it better.I use too at another board

That place does get out of line at times, but as said above, add a few more mods. Rodeo makes an excellent point about the sellers fielding the same questions over and over. Some of the sellers are new, and may not understand the full PM box thing, or the user interested in the sale item wont be able to send a PM, because the box is full ( ask me how I know). I also have learned alot by the questions asked in those sale items.

Not ragging on your new rule Noah, because it was getting very out of hand, but I think think there are other ways of implementing the same effect.

I'm not sure what we are all afraid of here. opinions? Get use to them and move on. I really like the comments/opinions made regarding the cars, prices etc. Good or bad. This is typically a fairly educated group, value wise. If you have something to sell and it's a good value, the comments usually reflect it and if not...... you run the gauntlet. Pucker up buttercup.

Hey, I did not know about this and I just opened a new thread. Let me copy mine here for consolidation purposes..

Due to the change of not being able to reply to the Cars For Sale section......

It gives me the impression that it is now stagnant.
I frequent it less and less.
I frequent the whole Pelican site less and less.
I feel weird, abandoned, and alone about the cars being posted.
I am beginning to feel suspicious about the sellers. (and yes! I am in the market....almost bought a car from a fellow Pelicanite this week but he decided to keep it).
The 'Pelican brotherhood' feeling is missing.

Strangely enough, I fully understand why the new format was implemented. What is more strange is that restricted posting is not new to me as I belong to an NSX forum with similar regulations.

What do you guys think about the new format?

heh, heh, heh, maybe my cure would be 1 or more of the following:

1. Call Dr. Phil.
2. Call Dr. Ruth
3. Start taking my Paxil.
4. Shift gears to NSX.

Is it possible for the "original posters and/or Moderators" to lock the thread so that if the seller does not want replies, then no replies get added.

Conversely, allow sellers to open a for sale thread that is unlocked which would allow replies.

locked/padlocked/closed....whatever term you want to call it.

Noah, I forgot to mention in my early posts on this topic that I thank you, and the other moderators, for the time you put into moderating forums. I am sure most, if not all, of the feedback you get about your moderating is negative. I am sure those with complaints out number those with praise, so thanks for your time to keep these forums here.

I fully understand the reason for change, no doubt. Maybe it is just "change" that we are reacting to.........

Cheers, enjoy the game on the weekend!

Disabling the ability to reply to posts was my idea, not Noahs, so I take full responsibility (although Noah agreed it was a good idea).

The classifieds are a place to list a car for sale - not for discussion. Plain and simple. If you wish to discuss a car for sale, then create a post in the 911 forum - we will not regulate comments there.

From a seller's perspective, it's very difficult to post an ad for a car, only to have it ripped to shreads by someone's "opinion" - some of whom have absolutely no idea as to what they are talking about. In the past, we have received many, many, many complaints from people who listed their cars only to have pundits and "commentators" critique the car and make it more difficult to sell. This additional commentary is not value-added to the goal of selling the car (the whole point of the classifieds), and has thus been disabled, at least for the time being. We tried additional "moderation" of the comments, but then people who were reprimanded also got all bent out of shape.

So, delete the classifieds forum altogether (seeing how it was irritating a lot of people on both sides) or limit replies to posts. We chose the latter. And, this was not like one bad apple ruining it for everyone - it was a lot of people who had no regard for the forum rules that were posted at the top.

Wayne/Noah: I don't disagree with your idea. In fact, I suport it. I would just like to see a template that requires sellers to fill in a PRICE and LOCATION before their post will appear. There are far too many questions regarding these two areas!
