What's that smell?

Always wondered if the 911 is supposed to smell when you turn the engine off? That burnt oil smell? Is it part of the engine charm? I smell it on my car and also a 88 Cerarra i test drove last week. Yeah another silly question I have

I have always considered it a part of the charm of a 911. I like to think of it as an aroma, like a leather bound book, or a great port wine!

That smell is from oil leaking onto the heater heat exchangers.

Oil cooler - right front engine compartment.

Valve covers.

I believe this smell is a function of having a relatively sealed engine compartment. Boat engine compartments, powered by very conventional american automotive V8s, have the exact same smell.

I always loved the tink tink tink of a hot engine when it is shut off. The aroma of a 911 engine driven hard and put away dry, ahhhhh. It sort of the love of hot brakes smell at the track. The smells of driving a 911. Nothing else even comes close.

All air cooled engines smell like that, even airplane engines smell like that. I love it, that smell with leather screams Porsche. I love that smell in my garage. Brings a smile to my face every time I am there.

I could find a old 911 blindfolded in a parking garage.

Mine certainly smells alot better since I fixed the tensioner leak. More of a "flutter" of burnt oil smell now vs a "hot nose full"!

There is no substitute!

You know what else smells great is burnt

Castrol R30 (racing oil). Motul 300V might have a similar smell.
I used to run R30 in my Vespa just to enjoy that aroma (?) from time to time.

I'm with 'ya man! I catch myself leaning over the tail as I exit the car to draw in a deep breath of that distinctive Porsche Musk. Combination oil residue, hot dust, hot rubber, hot brakes and a certain Je ne sais quoi.

Dont kid yourselves, its not a 911 thing. My 69 VW smelled like that and my 914's did as well.
