I think a couple of spots with the MIG welder'll take care of that...

Mike,

Looks great clean.

Get that 915 gearbox apart asap. The pressure washer will force water past the differential (axle flange) seals and, if left for any length of time, damage the big tapered roller bearings that support the differential and ring gear. Of course it can get in all sorts of other places – past other seals, breather. The seals are designed to keep oil from leaking out, not high pressure water from getting in.

Please get it completely disassembled, hot, dry and re-lubricated. Water in hidden places in a transmission spells D-E-A-T-H.

That gear looks like part of a fixed 2nd gear. This transmission is going to need some VERY careful inspection. I’ll bet the bearings that support the input shaft and pinion shaft in the main differential casting are now slip-fit at best.

Please give us a blow-by-blow description of what you find.

Best,
Grady

Mikey, try this, it's really cool:
Take that t-shirt you were wearing in the photos and throw it in the washing machine with your wife's delicates. Oh boy you will both share a good laugh

How much clearance do yoo actually have? that will prolly be the deciding factor. If it's .0001" out of tolerance no biggie, if it's .002" then I don't think the loctite would last.
The only loctite I would use in this application is the green cylindrical lock stuff, caint member the number. i have used it on machinery in the past and it is decent stuff. Having said that, i figure it is a band-aid to cover up a problem instead of eliminating it, something you would do if you plan to sell the car is two years.
If it were me (and I'm glad it's not) I'd have one of my machinists at work bore it oversized about 1/4" and shrink in a 420 ss insert to restore the proper fit if it is opened up significantly. You have a full machine shop, right?
Granted that may be overkill and the loctite might last longer than that car, but it also might not.

Grady,

you are spot-on. The bearing race for the output shaft has about 0.2mm axial play in its seat I wouldn't even call this a slip fit anymore. It's a close fit at best - The loctite stuff looks good on paper at ambient temperatures. However, IMHO it would only be a question of time when the race gets loose again and the ring&pinion is going to grenade. I guess off goes the diff housing to get welded up and machined at Wevo.

The scope of the tranny rebuilt clinic was expanded a little bit to fix some nasty oil leaks on the 964. What a filthy mess. The chain housings acted like open drain plugs and there was a thick crust of oil and dust baked onto the engine under the fan shroud. At some point in the past there must have been a nasty oil breather hose leak or breather cover gasket leak. This will kill an engine since it effectively blocks airflow across the cooling fins of the heads and barrels. I belive its the main cause for barrels to go out of round. We had to scrape off most of that stuff before agent orange could be put to work. I am sure there won't be any weeds growing in Mike's driveway for a long time to come. Maybe there will be an oil field discovered in the future.....

Here is the long block after its sponge bath.

The chain housings were leaking like sieves. All gasket surfaces were heavily corroded. Mr. razor blade and evil sealant were used before putting them back on. Next the cams get timed:

Close but not good enough:

Ingo

Ingo, Looks like you and Mike were working last night same as me. I got my WEVO trans mount in and al by myself!!!
Now get over to my house with those cleaning gloves and get to work on my bathrooms!

Souk, I was just there to help get the engine/trans out as Mike and Ingo had done all the prep the night before and with watching 3 kids my time was limited. Any way we just get the engine down and I can smell this "smell" and I look over at Mike and think "Damn man, you cant walk 2 foot over there!" Ended up up being Dylan with a little gift for Daddy.
(PS - luvn those monoballs! )
