Strange 964 cam timing - 2.2mm?

With my Euro 3.2L engine being disassembled in preparation for a rebuild, the shop has told me that the 964 cams I have been runnning with were set with timing of 2.2mm versus the stock setting of 1MM or 0.5mm.

What would have been the advantages of doing this? What was the original engine builder trying to accomplish?

Valve timing would be advanced. Maybe increase low - end torque? I'm no cam / engine expert.

Low-end torque would have been my guess also, though I imagine there is a price to pay with increased float in an over-rev situation. If crashmy911 is set there also I guess I am not alone, but my mechanic has never seen it before and doesn't understand why this timing was chosen.

Call EBS Engine Builder Supply and talk to them that is who recommended that setting to me. That is why I have it set there. I would think becasue you have the euro engine with high commpression pistons you could get away with the lower settings. I have the 8.5 I think commpression and my engine suffers from bad low rpm power.

Thanks! Do you have a number for them?

The stock setting for 964 cams is 1.26 +/- .1mm (1.16 to 1.36mm).

Don't set yours at what I'm telling you. This is from memory and I could be wrong. I just remember setting them this way and that was three years ago.
