really a great help to hear from you Tony.
combining with the bentley manual
your advice clears up the process in my head.
weather permitting I'll get them out tomorrowand clean up around the area there as well
when you say cleaning and lubing the injector ports, do you mean the hole that the injector fits into in the cylinder head leading down into the engine?
I should not be pushing anything down into that right?
I don't want any crap to get into the engine
what should I expect to find when I pull the injectors off? not loads of junk in there right?

Hi Paul, most of the time I have only found some of the varnish like residue from the fuel, and maybe at times some carbon deposits. After you get them cleaned, you can then plug the holes with what ever type of plugging material that you have. After you get them ready to be reinstalled, swab out the ports with a light coating of motor oil, it is then just a matter of pushing all of the parts back together. I actually found it easier to go ahead and install the injectors into the fuel rail, then install the bottoms back into the injector ports. If at all possible you need to use new o-rings, top and bottom. Once you get the injectors back into the engine, then you can re-assemble your fuel supply lines, after that, then install the bolts that hold the fuel rails in place to the engine. I loosened the cap at the end of the rail, where a pressure gauge can be attached, and ran the fuel pump to clear the air from the rails, etc. Have shop towels or paper towels ready to catch any gas. Just as soon as I got any fuel from the gauge port, I shut off the fuel pump, then made sure that everything was tightened up before I fired up the engine, and checked for any leaks. Some may not "bleed" the fuel lines or rails of air, but I do, so it won't take forever for the engine to be able to start after finally getting primed with fuel. Hope this helps. Good luck!!

thanks again for the advice!
I just removed them today and dropped them off to be flow tested and cleaned by these guys: http://www.allcarbs.com/shop.html
they will put fresh o rings on and also the little filters in the top and another piece I don't remember what he said, maybe an end cap down where the nozzle is?
any way 25 dollars an injector done in house and will be ready tomorrow.
I will pick them up thursday morning and have them back in the car that day.
definitely want to "bleed" the lines instead of working the starter motor for no reason.
I took a couple pictures of the fuel lines connecting the fuel rails. i think it needs to be replaced
the rubber line on the driver's side looks to be a little brittle.
I could not get the bolts holding the hard lines on the passenger side loose, but i managed to get the injectors out any way
I sprayed them with liquid wrench, so hopefully on thursday they will be loose. you can see the over spray from the liquid wrench in the 1st and 2nd pictures.

went and picked up the injectors today.
the shop said they were in pretty rough shape from 20 years of use.
they cleaned up nicely and looked like new.
they went back in quicker than they came out
"bled" the fuel rail at the fuel pressure test nozzle
spilled a little more gasoline there...
no worries
cleaned it all up
let the car sit a few minutes with the fuel pump pressurized just to see if there were any leaks
seemd fine
started her up
and she turned over instantly
never had that before
and it was 34 degrees here, which usually slows down the starting a lot
was snowing, so I didn't drive
maybe tomorrow if it is clear

got to drive today and I can tell you that cleaning the injectors was huge!
very very responsive now and so much more consistent
really am very happy with the results
the biggest improvement in the line of fuel management work I have done
definitely has been intersting to take one step at a time and see how they affect the performance of the engine.
