performance ideas

All,

I just purchased a relatively stock 85 carrera. Of course I'm looking to get the most performance out of the engine. (rebuilt about 60-80K ago.) I'm new to the 911s...so I'm wondering what the best HP for my buck is? I'm willing to spend up to $500 on engine performance.

Also...I've finally posted a pic...

Ditto John's recommendation of a Steve Wong chip.

www.911chips.com for information. Pelican sells them.

I would suggest a Dansk pre-muffler in place of the Fabspeed unit but either way you should be okay.

Don't expect miracles though, the motor still won't do much below 3,500 rpm but will be much more fun above that.

Welcome to 911 ownership!

Ralph

Welcome - great looking Carrera. Year of my choice.

Chipping and exhaust upgrading.

Edit: John beat me to it. Oh and Ralph too.

wow...thanks for the quick replies!!!

so...just outta curiousity the exhaust upgrades...are they CA emissions legal?

Yah...speaking of swiss cheesing the intake box...what about replacing it with a K&N? does it just sound good? I know on my Dodge 440, a K&N helped give that heavy breather a little more air...

Nice ride! That picture looks like it was taken up near the Lexington Reservoir in Los Gatos. (?)

I run a K&N Filter in the stock box with the lid cut open...from what I have read this filter gives more filter area than a cone filter....and it is cheaper...

80k miles: maintenance and chip

wires, rotor, cap and valve adjustment & plugs if necessary all should be verified if $500 is a rigid budget.

Removing the catalytic convertor and replacing with a pre-muffler is illegal to do in California (but many people disregard that). It is up to you whether you wish to skirt the law.

You can however simply swap out the pre-muffler for the catalyst every 2 years for the smog inspection, it's not difficult to do, especially if use high quality bolts, nuts & washers and liberal amounts of anti-seize on the threads.

Make sure whatever pre-muffler you decide on has the bung in place so you can reattach the oxygen sensor. If you do decide later not to use it for whatever reason, the connecting plug is easily disconnected on the top left side of the motor. The plug should be near where the coil & fuel filter mount.

You can even dispense with the "liberal amounts of anti-seize" if you use the stainless bolts and Silicon/Bronze nuts I advise in one of my posts.

The best hp improvement that you can make is to rev the thing to at least 6000. You may already, but I mention it because lots of first time owners are shifting at 4, 4.5, or 5000 and they are missing out.

The K&N won't give a performance improvement, and it's considered by many to actually not be as good a filter which increases engine wear. The air filter in a 3.2L car is not the power bottleneck. I'd just stick with the regular filter.

Your best hp upgrade is to put the car on a diet.

Not exactly a broad curve - under 500rpms you have the power to weight ratio of a honda accord...

Very lovely car.....welcome! As stated .5K dont go far towards performance on a P-car. Save your money for some SSI heat exchangers.

Don't hack your box....no performance increases IMO.

If the car has no deferred maintenance issues, use the improvement budget on you, the driver, at a good track driving school.

Not only will it vastly improve what your 911 will do, it will improve every car you drive for the rest of your life.

Probably the biggest seat of the pants improvements you would see - and assuming those are cast turbo twist wheels - chromed - you would probably notice the biggest gain by going to a light weight bbs or fuchs wheel. I bet those are over heavy wheels.
