Porsche Crest 3.2 Swap into '72, Oil Return Line Problem and Question.

Well, I have my engine in and all connected with many thanks and mega Props to LeeH and Jeff (C U L8R). We installed that bad boy on the 18th and it went well. We spent more time making wooden blocks, positioning the car and other misc prep than it took to actually put it in! This past weekend, 25/26, I finished making the rest of the connections, tidying up wiring, CV install, fuel system install, etc. Lee came over Sunday to help out and we were hopeful of turning the key

I removed the rear wheels to torque my CVs and make the oil line connection and hit a wall. The "unique to '72" return line has a 90 degree turn to the rear where it comes out at the engine mounted oil cooler. As you can see in the pic, I need to connect to the blue line.

My question is: Will my hard line from my 2.4 (on floor in pic) work with this 1988 3.2? I'm guesssing it will, but before I take off the muffler and heat exchangers, I thought I would ask here.

Any insight from other 72 owners that have swapped engines?

Engine shot! Fits like a glove!

Don,
Check with len@autosportengineering.com or go to autosportengineering.com . Len owns a Porsche shop and makes custom hoses. I bet he'd make an adaptor for you. Is that Blue line a true oil line? I'm not (in detail) familiar with the '72 oil system.

I notice you have the CAB motor mount (shock as part of the mount).

I have a back-dated style mount which would be cleaner. It would require a single cast crank pulley, instead of the stock double, however.

Let me know if you are interested in it. I just cleaned it up and have it painted in semi-gloss epoxy black. It looks very nice. You would need the engine console and the crossmember. I had a cab motor mount in mine with my 3.2 and am now doing the 3.6 swap, which has a different mount. I sold the 3.2 a few months back. Email me through the board, if you'd like.

Doug

Don, what are you doing with the original line that connects oil console to the hard line you mention? I'm desperatly looking for that piece for my 2.4S resto. You selling it? If so, pls give me a PM

Thanks

Dennis

Don, yes you can use the '72 line on your 3.2.

You'll need the original threaded '72 collar. You will probably have to wrap electrical tape around the end of the blue hose in the pic to make the fit nice and tight. The course threaded end of the collar threads around the blue hose, then you screw the hose and colllar over the fine-threaded end of the scavenge '72 hard line.

Don,

Looks nice! Am heading home today and will stay in touch. Have an antique airplane fly-in this weekend in Casa Grande or would come over and help...

BTW Don, I've actually got a 90 degree fitting that will screw right onto that scavenge hard line in the picture. The other end has normal barbs that the blue hose will slip right on to, and require a normal hose clamp.

Let me know if you want me to send it to you.

HOLY HEAT EXCHANGER BATMAN!! Yes I'd love to have it. That's a much easier solution than removing the entire exhaust! I'll call you later!.

Sorry Dennis, I reused the ends of the hose and fabbed up the blue line with them. The end in the pic was toast and stripped. I do have the short hose that runs from the tank to the hard line behind the wheel. PM me your address and I'll send it to you.

Other than just runing it along the floor, nothing yet. I need to attach it to the edge some way but I just want to get it running for now.

Don,
Here's the engine console and cross member that I mentioned to you. It is fresh painted in black epoxy paint, which is pretty nice. I'd bolt it in and run it, as is.

Not sure what the right price is. I'd say $75+ shipping. I think I paid about that and stripped it down and painted it. I think you can sell your cab one for similar.

You would need to back date the big crank pulley. I found an early cast brass one that was perfect, and it was a smaller diameter, so the alternator spins slower (less HP drag).

If that price isn't right, let me know.

Next, I didn't receive any note from you, even checked the spam folder.

Finally, thanks for the advice on the engine bay! I bought some POR topcoat silver last night. I'm going to try that product. You got me headed the right direction. Its flow characteristics seem just right.

FedEx... When it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight.

OK Don... you're cutting this pretty close. There's going to be a small crowd at PIR on Saturday expecting to see the Silver Bullet come rumbling into the paddock. Don't disappoint us.

Doug, I'll email you at the address you have listed!

Lee, This is going to be tough. Talk about everything HAVING to come together at the right time! If I get the part from Tyson (and it works), and there are no bugs to work out in the wiring or otherwise, I just may make it! No promises from me, though. I have had countless "target dates" in my mind for this car and they have ALL been missed for one reason or another. One step at a time and I won't be disappointed.

BTW, do you realize how far PIR is from my house? It's probably 60 miles from here. Would you make that your maiden voyage in this car?

I'd probably do a few laps around the neighborhood before heading out to PIR. Still, I'm guessing you'll be able to tell fairly quickly whether such a trip makes sense or not.

Are you going to have the oil cooler installed or is that going to wait?
