Introduction- New Porsche owner/New to forum...

I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I just purchased an '87 Carrera Cabriolet. The previous owner is a friend of the family, had just recently (Oct '05) replaced the hydraulic clutch assembly, clutch and entire AC system. He also earlier in '05 had a new top installed. The car was alway meticulously maintained and garaged. When I heard he was getting a new car and was going to just trade this car into the dealership I jumped at the opportunity.

I am very interested in doing the basic maintenance myself (and probably more) and would like to find some local owners that could get me on a good maintenance routine and possibly show me the little tips/tricks knowledge that only comes from completing these tasks hundreds of times. Anyway, this is an incredible forum with great members and I'm really glad I found this place!

Regards,
Alan

Welcome Alan, nice looking cab!

Wayne's book(our host, see header of webpage) "101 projects for your 911" is a must have and has many of those small tips/tricks. It's a must have for the DIYer

Hey Alan, congrats on the great buy!

I'm also a new Bay Area owner - purchased my '82 Targa about a month ago - and I was about to post a similar thread. I got Wayne's book, and I'm planning on starting up my tool collection this weekend (I already went on a Pelican shopping spree!).

I hope you don't mind if I can leech off any assistance you might find. I'm willing to drive anywhere if I'm available. Anyway, good luck. Maybe we'll hook up at a local event sometime.

You can get a free "pdf" copy of the entire factory workshop manual here and the parts manual here. This may be more than you want but for free ...

Alan, from one Cab owner to another, welcome aboard! You hit the nail on the head about this site. I found this site right about the time I got my car 1 1/2 years ago and have become addicted to it ("Hello, my name is Scott and I'm addicted to Pelican")

This forum probably has more collective knowledge within than any one person on the planet. Anything you ever need to know can be found here, usually by searching the archives or just coming right out and asking.

Beautiful Cab, btw.

Thanks for all the great information. I have already picked up the "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook" by Bruce Anderson and planned on picking up the Bentley. I will make sure I pickup the other books/manuals suggested.

A question to Cabriolet owners (and I did use the search function before asking) the original owner replaced the top early last year. The back edge of the top rubs when you lift the rear deck lid (engine lid). For whatever reason, he never brought the car back to get this resolved. Does anyone know if this can be adjusted or if this was just a bad top that is roughly an 1/8" too long?

The only other issues that I will fix immediately is replacing the shocks for the front trunk (I already found the Pelican Tech article on this) and replacing the driver's sideview mirror glass. The glass just simply fell out the other day.

Regards,
Alan

Almost everything you could ever want help with for your car is located right here in the magic "Search" box. It will be your closest friend for many months.

Alan:

You bought a 1987 Carrera 3.2! They just happen to be the very best vintage of the greatest sports car ever produced. You now own a little piece of the 911 "sweet spot". Guess what year Carrera I have--lol.

Anyway, get Wayne's 101 Projects and a Bently Manual. Don't send your baby out to a mechanic for things like an alternator in the future. You will save big $$ by DIYing anything within your mechanical capabilities.

News Flash, YOU DON"T NEED MORE HORSEPOWER! Drive your Carrera for a while first, then you will realize it is pretty much about: (a) driver skills, (b) alignment, corner balance, and suspension, (c) tyres, (d) weight reduction.

Congratulations on your new 1987 Carrera 3.2. you picked a real doozey!

Sincerely,

Mike
