There's nothing like the early lines of the 930 (first pic). I love that tail; the silver colour makes it even better.

It's sad to see the way they've jacked up the rear and blasted down the front. The classic 911 shape made you think the car was leaping forward, even when it was standing still. The modern version is just a wind-blown wedge, like every freakin' other car out there.

I know it's better, aerodynamically -- but the portrait of this one-of-a-kind car has gone from unorthodox and aggressive (and quintessentially Porsche) to, well... something that's kind of ordinary.

The last iteration, the 997 Turbo, is slightly better than the 996. (But geez...)

It would be good to edit legends for eash, MY, type,
VIN sequence, etc.

Here is a starter. This is a ’75 with the picture taken
in ’75 at Pueblo Motorsports Park. Of course there
were some slight mods. HeHe. I made this photo
into a Rennenhaus postcard. Fred has had some
other cool 911s.

But isn't that necessary? ...I mean, in order to fit all that hardware and plumbing in there? When you open the decklid of the new cars, they seem stuffed to the gills. How could they go lower in the back?

Since we're partly talking about wheels, the 993 picture reminds me of the beautiful black 993 Turbo I saw yesterday. Stunning looking car sitting on less than stunning wheels in my opinion. There's something blingy about them, especially in chrome.

The other thing that stands out in this sequence to me is how the post-964 designs accentuate the overhang. Without checking the numbers, it sure looks like the wheelbases have stayed the same while overall length has increased, and the much more truly flat bottom edges of the front and back only accentuate the perceived length of the overhang. The early cars get the balance just right I think, with both less body beyond the wheels, and design elements that soften the horizontal line. Personally, I like the full range of designs, but in the later cars, that overhang has always irked me a little.

That sequence just reinforces my belief that the 993 Turbo is one of the most beautiful 911s ever made.

Yes, the early car looks like it's leaning forward, punching a hole in the wind with it's chin out.

Compare the profile of the old windshield to the new. The rake, wrap-around, and radiused corners of the early windshield is such a key element to the look. Lost in the new cars.

Unfortunate facts:

- rear ends of all newer cars will be higher for aero and bumper height requirements.
- overhang will be greater for the water cooled 911's due to radiators and such. Same for "hardware" needs ( A/c , etc) in back.
- front windshield will never be slight wrap around ( late 50's style actually) due to A-pillar stength / rollover reasons......
