Porsche Crest 997 Gt3

I know that the 996 GT3 used a split case engine with water cooled cylinders and heads, unlike the normal 996 Carreras, and had more of a link with the original 901 flat six. Does the new 997 GT3 use a tuned 3.6 litre 997 engine or does it retain the 996 GT3's split case and racing heritage?

Thanks for any insights!

The 997 GT3 Cup uses a 996 part number on the case, unlike the 996 cup car, which uses a 964 case.

So the 997 GT3 is not a dry-sump engine like the 996 GT3? What did they do to the 996 engine to prepare it for the rigors of racing? I thought the 996 engine was not built tough enough for racing or even turbocharging. I wonder if the 997 Turbo will use the 996 engine case also.

I cant say for sure its a 996 case, but the 997 gt3 cup uses a case with a 996 part number. It could be a 964 case with a 996 part number. I havent compared the part number to a 996 street case or anything. It is dry sump and looks pretty similar to a 996 gt3 cup engine (no major changes that I can see).

One quick way to differentiate the "real" dry-sump ( aka 964) type engines from the 996 ( aka "semi-dry" or wet sump engines) is to observe the cam drives.

All older 911's....and the 964/993's...used a drive on the same "end" of the engine for both banks. Meaning?....as you opened the lid on the car, the cam drive on the left bank and the right bank were both at the very back end of the car.

With a 996/wet sump engine, there is a mirror-image set of parts used on the left and right banks ( cyl heads, etc)...so that the cam drive is on ONE end of the engine for one bank...and on the OTHER end of the engine for the opposite bank of 3 cylinders.

The 997GT3 is a real dry sump motor (split case too). The block part numbers changed from 964 to 996 during the run of the 996GT3 when the manufacturing changed from Germany to Spain, but it's the same part...
