How much clearance needed for O2 sensor?

I'm about to weld on the O2 sensor ring. I'm going to have the sensor in the top of the exhaust about 5" from the turbo. I need to make sure I have enough room to get the sensor in. It looks like I have about 2-1/2" if I locate it straight up. I checked the sensor on my R1100S and it's about 3-1/2" long. Is this the norm? If so, I'll have to angle it back which will mean I probably won't have room to put a steel bumper under my fiberglass C2 bumper.

I had to locate mine at 10:00 point to the rear. It wouldn't fit straight up.
