Question 70 911 5 Speed Shifter Question

Greetings old Porsche Pushers

The collar around my shifter fell apart recently and I obtained another from a dismantler. I put it all back together but it just doesn't feel the same and the action to get into first and reverse is weird. Here's my question: Should the travel be such that you pull the lever toward the drivers seat and against a spring load to get into 1st or reverse? Right now it's such that I push toward the passenger seat to feel the spring load and it's "natural" postion is in the 1st/Reverse slot. I believe this to be backwards.

I can't find another 70 with a 5 speed to do a reality check. Any input would be appreciated...............

Yes, the spring load should be felt when attempting to select the 1st/R plane. There is no spring action in the 2/3 or 4/5 planes.

What parts did you replace? You may have an assembly error, or maybe you obtained the parts from a '72 shifter, which looks like your original unit but is spring loaded for the 915 shift pattern.

Thanks for the reply and verification..........

I replaced the black collar( it had worn out and broken at the pivot hole) that bolts to the tunnel and the shifter protrudes through. All I replaced was the collar, I put the original lockout
plate, slides, and springs back that were in my original setup.

I've tried putting it all back together different ways but it only goes together one way so I'm thinking that my problem is at the other end of the rod mechanism somewhere.

What do you think?

If you feel the spring in the 4-5 plane, it is a shifter for a ’72 only. Compare the original to the replacement. If this is a ’72 then the spring plate will be on the other side compared to the ’70.

If this is a ’72, sell it to someone installing a 915 in an early 911 (’65-’71).

In ’73 Porsche changed to the larger alu casting.

Best,
Grady
