Polishing window frames? 68 different?

I just did a 1" test section on my window frame using 400, 600, 1000, 1500, 2000 grit sand paper and was impressed with the mirror like results - no more fine scratches. BUT I noticed that the frame must have some sort of clear coat protection because the outer areas got "foggy" unlike the area I sanded through - flashbacks from when I stripped one fuch. AND I was concerned about sanding through any chrome plating to raw metal. HOWEVER I do recall a few people telling me the 68 door frames are lighter due to the material. SO can someone shed some light in the subject for me?
Is the 68 door frame different from other model years? If I started with a rougher grade to wipe out some of the deeper scratches do I run the risk of going through any plating? I assume that much like polished fuchs a little bit more care will now be involved without the clearcoat. This might be thge excuse I need to scotch brite all the brightwork on the car .

Wow, I can't imagine trying to polish all of the trim. The Mother's or whatever would get all over the rubber, I would think.

I also can't imagine your car looking any better. Man, as for narrow bodies, wow! I love your car.

The earlier cars had chrome plated brass frames, and later they were anodized aluminum. It sounds like yours are aluminum, so the results will be much like those for the Fuchs. There is a place that refinishes and re-anodizes the frames, but it ain't cheap. I think it is called Anobrite. Search for a recent thread on the subject. The Scotch Brite idea is interesting. That would be cheap, and might look great. In the name of science, I think you should give it a try (and post pics)!

Thanks guys! Anodized aluminum makes sense. Guess I got another project ahead of me. Scott - do you know if the rear qtr windows are also anodized aluminum?

Bob,

I've got a 69 Euro spec coupe and took my trim to a mate the does polishing for a living, and he said that it all was bright dipped aluminum.

Bright dipped aluminium is a term used to describe Anodising..
Reanodising is cheap enough, its the polishing which costs.

It needs to be very very good ( ie fine grit) to be worth while..

Yes, if the door frames are bight-dipped anodized aluminum then the quarter windows should be also. The appearance of the chrome finish is noticeably different from the anodized versions. Does anyone now if '68 was the first year for aluminum? Do '68 coupes have fixed front vent windows?

The ’68 production cars, both 911L and 912’s, were a transitions year, even more than most years. Technically, yes ’68’s have the aluminum trim as opposed to the chrome. The ’68’s still had the moveable vent wings with a black vinyl/rubber type cover on the latch.
