How do I rebuild a starter?

I have a buddy with a bad starter. It isn't totally toast - it is pretty clear it just has a bad "spot"...so I figure we can rebuild it. After all, it's just a 12VDC electric motor, right? Any ideas?

I know that around my area there are several places that will do the rebuilds and it is fairly inexpensive, like $50. just a thought you might want to go that way.

I typed "rebuilding starter" into the search function and came up with 23 threads. You can start with these or change the search terms slightly and get others. The search function is your best friend!
