engine smoking at idle

so here is the story. test drove the car, ran great. get it home after purchase, drive it about 10 miles, stop off at my garage and top off oil because it was low on the dipstick. took to quarts, now its at max. drive about 3 miles, stop at a red light, after 30 seconds at idle, smoke starts pouring out of the exhaust, i pull over. it smells of oil. no loss of power and engine still idles good, just tons of smoke. so after a few minutes of idle smoke gets light. i try to drive it home. after about 200 yards of driving, smoke is all gone. stop at another light after about 30 sec. starts smoking bad again. long story is, when it is at idle it smokes something crazy but after a few hundred yards of driving it goes away completely. checked oil again, it is at max. what the heck is happening?

its in my 73 with a 3.0 transplant.

brian.

Quickly drain 2 liters, keep the level midway between max/min with engine hot and running.
With engine off, open the airfilter cover, remove airfilter, clean out oil from airbox with rags.
Use Injector cleaner at some point (2 cans on 80 liters) and run it hot for a while.

You have two 911's and one 912 and you check the oil with engine off?
Drain oil out on all of them and get a manual, please!

it makes perfect sense now, when you check the oil while the car is not running all it is taking in account is the oil in the exterior container, not the oil in the crankcase, i cant believe i made such a stupid mistake.

Wayne's book 101 Projects for your Porsche 911 is great, easy to read and has a section on oil changes. Highly recommended!
