Am I a canditate for a WEVO sideplate??
Need some opinions here from some of you tranmission gurus. John, Tyson, Grady, Chris.....you guys there??
So, the 915 is on the stand for some cleaning and I am going to change the output shaft seals so once I have the flanges out I decide to yank the diff out too...... What I find is that the diff bearing on the side cover side is really badly worn and so is the race. Yet the bearing on the other side looks wonderful as does it's race. The wear pattern on the ring gear is very, very even. (I tried to get a pic of that but just can't seem to get a decent photo). 1. What the heck causes this? This is an 84 with the reinforced cover. 2. Is a WEVO cover with the 930 bearing the solution? 3. Should I do both bearings? 4. Can I just change the bearings or do I have to re-shim the trans, not something I am excited about...... 5. This trans shifts beautifully, I can put her in first at 25+mph if I want to, should I tear into the whole thing? Maybe I will be ready for NEXT YEARS DE season.. ![]() Any advice here is greatly appreciated. I have searched and searched but.... Here are some pics Here are a couple of the bearing from the side cover side of the trans... And one from the bearing on the other side...

Oh, did I mention I will be putting around 300HP through this thing once the engine is built??

All I can help with is the damage part. Hard launches and high torque applications beat that bearing mercilessly against the side plate. The other bearing is just along for the ride.

Thanks, we were posting on each others threads at the same time...
I am pretty easy on the car from a launch. I drive the $hit out of it on the track but am pretty tame on the street. That said, my bearing wear certainly confirms what you are saying!! Cheers

Too big to fail

Well, looks like you're a candidate for a better camera, anyway
![]() If I were you, apart from ending every sentence with "eh?," I'd do the WEVO cover and new bearings.

Definitely an over-loaded carrier bearing. Like catca said, that's the one getting all the load under acceleration.
The WEVO side cover is definitely a good idea, as it utilizes a 930 carrier bearing, which will certainly be able to better deal with the extra loads you're going to put on it. Also, use Swepco in your trans if you aren't already. It's very good at dealing with these high loads.

One more thing to add. Make sure you get the carrier bearing pre-load set correctly.
Too high carrier bearing pre-load will pre-maturely kill that bearing.

Catca - Do you run (or plan to add) an LSD? I'm about to start a 3.6 conversion (only about 247HP) and my shop said I had better go LSD with the added power. I like the WEVO side cover idea also, thanks Tyson!

The car has the factory LSD in it. Run Swepco in it already
![]() Thom we spell Canada C-eh-N-eh-D-eh! ![]() Dare I ask what the trick to getting the bearing pre load correct is?? Cheers

Thanks for the link, MuffinMan - your trans looks awesome!
I'm almost afraid to ask, but 1) how much for that Wevo sideplate, and 2) it is an easy install, or does a bunch of reindexing, fitting, adjustment have to be done? |

It's not bad. You need to remove both axle flanges, and the old side cover. Then remove the diff., and use a puller to remove the old carrier bearing. From here you just need to get the right amount of shims between the diff and the new 930 carrier bearing to achieve the proper carrier bearing pre-load. You may get lucky, and it may be right with the old shim-stack thickness. If not, then pull the 930 bearing back off, and add/remove shims until it's right. That's it.

Hmmmm, thanks Tyson, I guess that doesn't seem so bad...... How do you measure the preload?
Cheers

Then once it's bolted up, you turn it over many times to seat everything, then measure the bearing drag by spinning the flange with an inch/lb. torque wrench to measue the torque required to spin it.
