info on converting my race car to a 993 rear suspension

I am looking for any information, pictures or contacts regarding an update to a 996 or 993 rear multi-link suspension from the older trailing arm style that I currently have on my race car.
I know it has been done but I cannot find any info on it. Any help would be appreciated.

I HAVE POSTED AN UPDATE AND SOME PHOTO'S OF THE 993 REAR SUSPENSION INSTALLED IN MY 78 SC CHASSIS (4/6/06)

There was an article in Excellence a few years back on an early car which was converted to 993 suspension. It wasn't a tech article, but did show some pictures. Jeff Gamroth at Rothsport, aka flipper, did the work.

I helped with a conversion like this a few years ago. You can P.M me and I will tell what I know. Pretty neat, but pretty involved as well.

I don't know if Steve Weiner has done the 993 swap. I don't know if anyone has done the 996 swap. Based on the changes to the unibody with the 996, it would be much more work to do it with a 996 rear end, and it's definitely no walk in the park with the 993 components. Among other things, you need a jig to get everything lined up perfectly. You also need to cut out a lot of the recipient car's suspension, and build shock towers strong enough to support the weight of the car.

This thread on Rennlist has Cary Eisenlohr sounding in on it. He's done a bunch of the swaps, but I think in conjunction with shops that have set up the jog for it.

This guy did it on his own. Most of his site is in Swedish, but even he ended up with problems, as are noted in this old Pelican thread.

As prommised here is an update of the now complete 993 rear suspension conversion on my 1978 SC based race car. I am very glad I decided to have 3R automotive do this job as it was very involved and required some expert fabricating.

Randy, It was just finished and I have not had time to get to the track. I hope to get some seat time next week.

That's an impressive project. Very pretty as well. I like the ERP arms (I have them too), solid mounts and JRZ's. In the second picture - what's the bent arm? Is that a link for a through-body sway bar??

I have to ask though - why? To a novice like me, it seems like an amazing amount of work in comparision with just stripping a 993 tub. Is there an advantage in class rules?

Thanks for sharing,

Don

Don, There are several reasons. The main reason is that I had already built the car, the other is that the older chassis is lighter than a 993 and up untill recently there was a class advantage to using the older chassis but now I don't believe that is the case.

I am wondering if hanging the two rear hubs from a full custom made suspension with Bilstein coilovers would be easier? I have a 912 right now that I am thinking about selling. Body isn't bad, whole thing isn't that bad so I was thinking about just swapping in a bigger Porsche engine but then realized that the suspension is crap (66 912) so why not make one? Perhaps its not easier?

I don't think that would give you the same control of tire attitude that the multi-link does. I don't know which parameters are th e problematic ones that change under suspension travel (Camber, caster, toe) but I'm pretty sure one or more are.
