Does anyone prefer CIS over Motronic ?

Let's just get to the meat...does anyone prefer the SC's to the Carreras!

CIS is 98.732% mechanical.

Better throttle response.

Turn a screw a few degrees and it passes emissions . .. turn it back and it runs great.

My SC isn't the first cis car I have owned, I find the system easy to work on and it pulls like a train. It isn't as flexable as the motronic, so hopping it up takes a little more work. Apples and oranges

Yes, I perfer the my 3.0L CIS motor to that of my fathers...a Euro 3.2. Both hotrodded.

Nope, can't say that I do. If you to pass emmisisons with you motronic car, just take it in for testing..........

Arguably, the same is true for CIS if set properly. I have a 79 Euro motor with SSIs and I rolled up, sniffed and drove home with no problems or no adjustments. I know guys with cats that cant do that. Just saying, it can be done with CIS.

Depends on your point of view, some people like the mechanical aspect of cis, and it's turn screw adjustability. I like Electronic control because it takes what a bunch of pneumatic and other mechanical things can do, into a few silicon integrated circuits. And when i ever get to converting me CIS to efi, i'll let you know just how slow my throttle reacts

I really think the Q should have been: Does anyone prefer CIS to Motronic (with a spare DME relay and a Steve Wong chip . .. and new rod bolts to handle the higher rev's) --Just to make it fair.

I like the ease of diagnosing problems and tuning of the CIS. It's more in keeping w/ the old school mentality of the typical shade tree mechanic (like me).

Jeff, I know I hope I didnt offened. I was just saying that the right person can make the CIS a great system that is clean running and such. Obviously, with Motronic life is a lot less work.

I guess I will go ahead and relay my observations.

My father's car is a 77s with a 3.2, SSIs, some ignition work etc.

What I like is the smoothness to the motor, it is much more like a modern day car in that aspect. I think the pull it has on the high end is awesome and really enjoy the car all around. But that said, my CIS Euro 3.0 has less power overall I imagine but a much bigger mid range punch. I love the grunt of my little motor, with strong "throw your head back" acceleration that is a bit more fun for the driver and passenger alike.

My dad and I should do a pull and see how similar our power is.

NO offense taken at all! I have owned 3 motronic 911's and 3 cis ones. I like the motronic, it is nice and simple from an owners standpoint. Does not require adjustment or maintenance really. Cis works well too when it is tuned properly. I rebuilt a couple of SC motors last year and found the whole cis plumbing and such to be a bit combersome, but the motors ran well and were very strong once I had them dialed in.

Rod bolts have nothing to do with it, but you already know that

I prefer Bosch Motronic ME 7.5 with my laptop running VAG-COM......

But for a 28 year old SC .............. K-Jetronic is just fine.

For you whiners...why not put in ABS and Airbags too with your EFI...and a little GPS nav toy. Next to your Latte holders...

Don't forget the new head studs in the 3.0 since several of the originals were broken and the various stuck, malfunctioning valves and pumps in the CIS system, exploding airbox, and CARRERA tensioners.



Just trying to keep things fair. Oh, and don't forget to get the license plate of the Carrera as he passes you because of the extra power and the improved fuel mileage because of the advanced fuel management system.

Not that there's anything wrong with CIS. It's just not the best system.

PS Looking for a show of hands here, who would rather have their DME relay crap out than their timing chain tensioners at 70mph on the freeway? OK, thx.
