Diff ID Help
I have just bought a trans from a well known member on this board, it was advertised as having a LSD, however when I have come to examine it, it just looks like a standard diff to me having never seen a LSD I would like someone more knowledgable to confirm this for me.

From a bit of searching I think its clear to see this is just a standard diff, and not any form of LSD as the seller claimed either he was lying when he said the box had been "gone through" and really did think it had a LSD or he knew it didnt and was plain and simply trying to scam me.
More worryingly on further examination I have noticed 2 cracks in the bell housing one that has been welded up and the other untouched. Any one have any idea what can cause a case to crack in this area? Can these be welded or is the case screwed? I will post pics when im home from work. Im so angry right now I carnt explain! you pay good money at the going rate for a good trans from a member this board with a load of positive feed backs and still get screwed!

I would simply ask for your money back (and all of your costs) and return the transmission. Even some MM (Mickey Mouse) operations respond to the collective power of this Forum
I would reconstruct all of your dealings in case having that documentation is necessary. My eye tells me the differential bearings need replacing. The one shown in your image is the least loaded so I suspect it may have been overheated or run low on lubricant. Cracked bell housing usually means the original 911 was in a serious crash (totaled). In your image I can’t say about the condition of the ring gear. What is the orange around the side cover? Please post more images (clean the oil off) and we can better evaluate the condition. Sit down, take a deep breath, have a glass of something stronger and it will all work out. This brings up the extreme difficulty of buying (and selling) used transmissions. The issue is knowledge. A skilled mechanic who has been involved with these transmissions over the years can readily determine the type and condition. I regularly recommend having the seller and buyer send the transmission to a skilled intermediary for inspection – just like a PPI. If I had a transmission for sale, I would have detailed images of all the internals and offer to have it physically inspected by any of the dozen and more local experts at the potential buyer’s option. Once the transaction is completed, the intermediary could ship the transmission. A Porsche transmission is incredibly easy to partially dissemble for inspection. The cost in labour and parts is minimal. It just takes a practiced eye. Best, Grady

Hi Grady thanks for the responce the diff is actually sat on a biscuit tin lin thats what the orange is. I bought this trans on the understanding it had been examined and was good supposedly by a race gearbox specialist. heres what he said about the box in responce to one of my questions.
"Its been gone trough by a Specialist , he is doing all our Race gearboxes . It has a Oilcooler extern and a Oilpump intern with Spraybars for the Gears. Mileage is 84.000 Kilometers ( 52.000Milees )." The trans had definatly not been apart recently as it had old oil leaks with road dirt stuck to it anyone stripping a trans would have at least cleaned the outer cases up. The other concern I have is his claim it has spray bars, as so far to my limited gearbox knowledge there is no signs of any spray bars just the standard ROW 3.2 cooler. Im waiting for his responce to my e-mail to him before I start considering my options as what to do I will post more pics of the trans condition later. Thanks Steve

Ive just taken some mor pics of the internals of this trans comments welcome.
![]() The pinion drive seems to me to be in good condition with no visable wear patterns. look how dirty the interior of the dif housing is certainly not a trans that has "been through by a specialist" not in the last 10 years anyway. ![]() ![]() My claened up diff bearings im not sure what to think about these?

Has the end casing was leaking oil from the gasket i decided the end casing may as well come off and this is where it gets much worse!
![]() Look at the top gear on the reverse idler there is actually metal missing from a couple of th teeth.
