Color change my 74 Carrera ??? - Page 2

I think Grand Prix White is the best color. If not that, than silver- Arctic Silver or one that looks like bare aluminum. I think blue is third best but I prefer more vibrant blues- like subaru's or audi's- than mexico blue or even gulf blue.

I'm in a mildly similar position... except mine is a '74 Carrera Targa, and it's number 248 of the 252 US specs made that year.

To really complicate things... my car was originally Viper Green, and a PO painted it white! Actually, it's a really faint grey. You don't notice that it's not GP White until you put something white next to it...

AND... when I do the restoration, I'd prefer Mexico Blue... because my first 911 was a '74 Mexico Blue!

And I'm torn between a "correct" resto, or just doing it my way. Haven't decided yet.

If only I could find a complete MFI setup for it I'd...

My personal favorites are Peru Red...Gulf Blue...or Grand Prix White...in that order...

GP White is a great color. I can see you wanting to change since you already own a white car. However, one day down the road, this car will be worth something. Being a purist, I believe the car should be left original. When looking at a car and someone mentions a color change, bad thoughts race through peoples minds. If you want a color change, paint the 87. Only my 2 cents.

Ah, yes... but you have a coupe. While the coupe may in fact be a stiffer body, and therefore better on the track... there's a reason that I bought a Targa... It has a lot to do with sunny days and starry nights....

OK, option 3....74 Carrera RS look. I mean, if I'm guna color change it, and need to do work to every fender on the car, including bumpers and hood, why not take em all off and replace them with fiberglass? How much freak'n work will it be to delete the sunroof? Derek

It can be more work than you would ever imagine to change the body to fiberglass. My car was a 1971 911S that already had IROC fiberglass bumpers and a ducktail. It was IROC green. The car got rear-ended so I decided to convert the whole thing to fiberglass. That was ten years ago. Do I need to elaborate? The car didn't even have a sunroof. Fiberglass has many disadvantages- the gaps can be terrible to get right and certain shapes just aren't up to Porsche standards. Also, the quarter panels need to be cut off the tub, leaving a seam. It is a heluva lot lighter, though...

My opinion- if you have good original body panels, stay with them. I like white or silver for colors. If you must have fiberglass, you will go faster. I recommend Kevin at Automotive Innovations in Van Nuys. He worked on my car and cars in Excellence magazine. His phone number is (818) 730-1381. Kevin can make the car look as good as you want it to. Of course, the more time you put in to bodywork, the better it looks.

UPDATE:
OK, so I got some inspiration to go with the car as is for now. Decided to put the car together, instead of stripping it down for the concourse resto. It has been fun. And I am enjoying the process. Here is how she looks now, after the last 2 or 3 weeks of putting it together. It's unfortunate that the car needs paint, because everything else is really very nice, interior, motor, lines and gaps, trim, rubber, glass, alloy, etc. Cleaning the car from the bottom up revealed very nice original finish wheel wells, underbody, motor compartment and no rust issues anywhere.
It will be my 'Ratrod' Porsche for now. I actually kinda like the aged patina of the car, and the further I get along, the less likely I may ever take it apart for paint. :-)

At first glance, I didn't care for the gold, but now I love it! Very cool looking. As long as the paint is 'decent', I'd keep it as is and DRIVE it. I think it's a beautiful car just like it is!

BTW, did you sell the carrera spoiler? Just curious...

Thx, and yes I did sell the Turbo spoiler it came with.
Currently on the car is Ducktail copy, but I got very lucky a few weeks ago, and scored a real 74 Ducktail on eBay for $600 buy it now price. It is currently in the shop, getting touched up and painted. Also have the correct metal grill, with 2.7 badge ready to bolt to it.

The thing about the car in this condition is your not afraid to go out and have some fun in it! :-)
