Removed Oxygen sensor thread question
I just removed my oxygen sensor, from a 85 Porsche 911 Targa. The sensor came out hard even using a lot of PB Blaster Penetrant. The sensor threads are mostly stripped off the sensor.
The threads in the cat. converter for the most part look usable. But some of the top threads in the cat look like there is metal in the threads or are stripped a little. Question? How can I clean up the threads in the cat? Do I run a bolt in the hole? If yes what size mm? Can I use a tap and die What size tap. I never used a tap and die so I dont want to screw up th cat with out some knowledge and insite. Any advise would be welcomed. thanks

I just had to remove 3 02 sensors from a '97 993 exhaust. The size is: 22MM X 1.5
I think they are all the same size..... Drums

you a thread chaser. Take your 02 sensor to a hardware store, they will take the measurement and buy the same size chaser. Then just clean up the threads as best you can. I just fixed my engine case oil drainhole same way after removing the drainplug that was overtorqued by the previous Porsche gorilla, oops I mean mechanic.

Hmmm.....Better check that... I think they're 18mm x 1.5 for the 3.2....

Thanks Wil for the thread. I bought a 18 mm tap used that and also bought a 14/18 mm spark plug hole thread chaser. After using both of these the threads straightened out well. Now just waiting for the sensor to be delivered.

Drums' comment on it being 22mm *might* be the head diameter....the size of the tool required to install/remove. The thread is 18mm x 1.5 pitch....
We need to be *very* careful with our recommendations ( clarity) when folks are buying tools like chasing dies and such !!! - Wil

Sorry, but 22mm x 1.5 is the correct size for the 993 h.e. and I did clarify that point in the original reply....read again for your clrification.

Well...that was wrong.... You also answered a question coming from a guy who has an 85....the 22mm size is wrong for an '85.... what point is knowing the size for a 993 when that's not the car he has..... I still stand by my remark that we must all be careful with our answers.... people are doing things.... and buying stuff... based on the answers given in this forum... - Wil
