Can you delete the A.A.R.
 

I live in Hawaii and just purchased my first Porsche:D It's a '76 with a '78 3.0 motor.

I wanted to know if I could get rid of the Auxiliary Air Regulator and associated hoses and just add a crank case breather box.

I havn't taken apart my wiring harness yet so I am not sure if the wiring is complete. The CSV is plugged in and so is the AAR, however there is no Thermotime switch. So I don't know if I need the AAR. I would like to get rid of it.

You probably don't need it, living in Hawaii. RarlyL8 says he has his removed, and says the engine works just fine. I think he is in the southern US.

Mine is gone but the engine is a 930.
I had a 3.0L SC back in Illinois so the AAR was left intact. I can't say what adjustments may need to be made on that engine (if any) to compensate for the removed part. All the device does is increase the idle of a cold engine after start-up.

Thanks for the info RarlyL8. I'll be leaving it out. I am re-doing the wiring harness this weekend and I'll at least leave the connections available. I hope to have my turbo set up complete in the next couple of weeks. Then it will be time to enjoy.

I took mine off my 78 280Z and I just had to feather the throttle for a few seconds when it was cold. I'm not planning on having one with my new EFI setup.

Not sure on the AAR though...I've always had mine in...haven't had to mess with it since it's still working.

I would leave it. What is the reason for deleting it? The cost of the new part? If you can't afford a new\used AAV, then I see trouble in your future. The part is there to perform a function; why not leave it as the factory designed it?

you just dont NEED the AAR, AAV, Decel Valve, Thermal time switches, air pump, etcetc, most of this stuff is purely for passing the smog/emissions tests or for assisting a cold start in colder climates. You DO need the WUR though so leave that. There are lots of threads on this subject, I just got done removing all my "junk" this past weekend :)
More space for doing your tune-ups and cleans up the engine bay very nicely.

You need them. If, as in CA, it gets into the 40's-50's and is wet at night during the winter, you need them. Who's to say where the car will end up in future? Not to CA if it's had some of its injection pieces removed. They certainly don't make the car run any worse (and will quite probably make it run better), so why not repair them properly?

Edited to say: I guess I wasn't wholly clear. I would leave out some stuff mentioned by diabolos but use others. I would use the AAR (for a steady idle when cold), AAV (for increased air at startup), and the thermotime switch (which triggers the cold start valve, which you should also have).

Ianc' sactually right, if you live in CA, then yes I agree totally with what he stated.

He lives in Hawaii. Not much chance that car is gonna end up in California. I don't build/mod my cars with the home town of the next owner in mind. If it ends up in California you have bigger problems than a missing AAR.

Why not save the deleted components in case the next owner needs them?

Well the stuff comes off 4 sure and will be boxed up in the shed. Might use the CSV with my turbo set up though:D

Why not backdate the AAR? Remove it and the plumbing and add that cool hand throttle between the seats!

early turbos have a hand throttle AND a AAR. what's the theory on that i wonder? i removed the AAR on my 77 turbo and just use the hand throttle. works fine and cleans up the area.

Do you have a picture of the hand throttle and what advantage does it give?
