AC blower (under dash)

I have a 1986 911 cab, when I select the AC blower the fan under the dash is noisy. Has anyone replaced this fan and is the replacement straight forward and accessable.

Moderator - please move this question to the 911 forum.

Jetamerica - there is likely an existing thread on this topic. Here's one example

Moving to the 911 forum.

There really isn't a fan under the dash. There are two blower fans, one in each footwell, but those are used for heat only.

the AC fan is in the smugglers box on the trunk. you need to disconnect the AC lines, and remove the evaporator core to get at it.

The blower fan is in the top half of the evaporator housing. You can CAREFULLY (so they don't fall into the smugglers box) remove the clips holding the halves of the evaporator housing together and remove the top half without having to disconnect the A/C hoses.

Removing (and reinstalling) the clips isn't easy, but I have found a great aid is a tool like below. It hooks into the little holes in the clips. You can then pull to expand them open to remove them or pull them across to snap them back on. It makes life much easier.

Once you get the evaporator housing top off (don't forget to disconnect the fan motor connection) you can get to the motor to lube or replace it.

Good luck!

Another tool that is sometimes helpful in releasing the evaporator/blower housing clips is the tip pin in a set of 45 or 90 degree retaining ring pliers. Use the pin in a single leg of the pliers to engage the hole and pry off the clip. Jim
