A/C front right fan motor noise
Hi. When I turn on the A/C blower on my 1986 Carrera there is a noise which sounds like the bearings in the fan are squealing. It comes from the area right behind the glove box. I think a little oil might solve the problem. Any suggestions on how to access the motor/fan unit?
Thanks, Mark |

It's the evaporartor motor nestled inside the hinged cover ("smuggler's box) under the trunk floor..... do a search on evaporator motor...
Not easy to get to or to oil...naturally...we're talkin' Porsches here.... Wil

Indeed, a very common issue, search for a post by "Gost" in 7/2005. It and a link contained there are the best descriptions I have seen on the frustrating process of getting the AC evap blower out. I did mine and with cleaning and lube it is like new. There are also threads on other solutions including new motors.

I replaced the evaporator motor in my '85 soon after buying it... not such a bad project. I even talked my sister to replacing it herself in her '88 Carrera & she did it! If she could do it herself, bobo the chimp could do it.... easy job.
regards, jlex.

Jlex....what did you do to get the clips off all 4 corners ? That was tough...give up your secrets or we will tell your sister what you said about her!

Uh oh... blackmail.
There's probably a special tool used by the factory that opens those spring steel clips. You can do it with just a long screwdriver. Just pry them off. If you want to try to keep them, get a thin piece of wire & loop it around the clip before you pry them or they'll drop to the bottom of the black hole known as the "smuggler's box". You won't be able to get all of them back on anyway. To reseal the two sections of the box after the fix, just use duct tape or light-duty caulk around the perimeter. This is only a 2 hr. job from start to finish. Nice Sat. morning project. Be sure to test the new motor before buttoning it all back up.. if your fan is misaligned on the shaft of the new motor you won't want to trade one noise for another. regards, jlex.

I heard you can drill and zip tie the covers back too..the clips ( re-install) are a pain with the box still nestled inside the smuggler's area.
