Euro 204bhp & SSI dyno plot
I know there's a few collectors on the board so here's another for the records.

Thank you very much, bruboy! My 82 SC is a Euro w/SSI, smog pump removed. The mechanic who installed the SSIs & Dansk dual in/dual out said my engine was probably making 220 - 225 HP.
If I've read the graph & converted from KW to HP correctly, the graph shows a tad over 221 HP out of that engine. Now I've got some hard copy to back up my bragging rights!

the graph is not too clear but it conversts to 210 bhp at 6230 RPM. Mine has air pump removed with a dual in single out oem 74 (2.7) carrera back box. Your dual outlet will probably give a bit more

That's pretty sweet. Any idea what a Euro Carrera would put out with the same setup?

Now I'm all deflated & confused. I know the factory rating is 204 bhp. I've read that SSIs will up that by 10 - 15 bhp - is that hype? Your 210 bhp having increased only 6 bhp from the factory rating makes me ask why SSIs are considered such a good upgrade, considering their high cost. Is there a DIN/SAE conversion factor I'm failing to consider? My engine is quite torquey down low, as percieve it, and I'm really lovin' the car, my first Porsche. Do the SSIs increase torque more than bhp? I'm not a hp/torque junkie or I wouldn't have gotten rid of a 99 Vette to get the SC, which is much more fun to drive - just a newbie trying to learn. I tried numerous searches, but am too tech. challenged to be able to ferret out the answers to my questions. Thanks for your response.

Don't forget that you are talking about 20+ year old engines in varying degrees of tune, condition and fuel. If you do a search here...you will see incredible differences in dyno results between essentially the same car. The only way to really tell the value of an upgrade such as SSIs is to test immediately before and after install.

dont be! I think the 10-15 bhp applies to the earlier 180 bhp SC. For me the peak power of 210 bhp is not the most important factor. The SSI's seem to spread the torque curve with mine being flat from 4500-6000 with a slight peak at around 5400, I think the standard car peaks at around 4800rpm. Peak power is also made at a little higher rpm , 6200rpm compared with 5900rpm standard. Its a nice engine to drive and if your happy with yours remain so! cheers

Don't forget, the dyno is measuring HP at the rear wheels. The factory HP rating is at the flywheel. There is around a 15% HP loss when measuring at the rear wheels.

Bruce,
Thanks for the explanation. I've had the car less than a year and only drove it for a week, bone stock, before putting it into the shop for seven weeks. When I got it back I was really pleased with what seemed to me to be a lot more low & mid range grunt. I also noticed that it seemed to pull harder at the high end, to the extent that I found myself several times going deeper into the red zone than I'm normally inclined to do. Torque is an important seat of the pants thing for me. I had a 95 RX7 R1 twin turbo that was electrifyingly quick & fast, but never quite got used to the feeling of very low torque off the line. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
