I know, not another fuchs question, and yes I did a search and did not find a definitive answer.
So what does Vaseline on Fuchs do and what is the proper method of applying and removing? I.E. do you simply rub it on and then off or do you let it sit and then remove? And if it makes any difference I have the original finish on my deep 6's. Thanks...

I think you would be better off just applying a coat of wax and buffing them off....Vaseline would tend to attract brake dust and road grime I would think...I have heard to the process...never understood it.

i think guys do this prior to car shows where they plan to trailer the car, but not drive it and pick up all the road dust..just brings out the luster.

If you have an owners manual, that's where the vaseline treatment recommendation originates (I believe it's referred to as petroleum jelly in in the manual). I apply it with my fingers and let it penetrate overnight, then wipe it completely off.

You don't put Vaseline on the painted center part - only on the anodized rim. And you just rub it in and wipe it off - ALL off. If you collect dust/dirt then you've left too much on. When you're done, you should not be able to feel any greasiness at all. Therefore, use it sparingly. It really makes the anodized aluminum look great.
For the centers, which are painted, use wax. |

Yes. The anodizing is porous (but TOUGH)...that's why I let it penetrate for a bit...
ps: edited: Yes, what Dave said...just on the outer lips (damn, that sounds almost dirty ....)

well....mine will never see a trailer thats for sure....my centers are painted with rattle can paint....and I just have to polish the rims...and when I had my 70T with deep 6s....they were polished so I just had to polish those as well....guess thats why I never tried the petroleum jelly thing

it helps to take the milky, spotty finish away, from using the wrong wheel cleaner, etc.

Earlier in the manual it states "pitting may occur if metallic particles which cause contact corrosion (e.g. brass or copper in brake dust) are allowed to remain on the aluminum for too long." From this I infer that the vaseline seals any pores in the metal and forms a protective layer against brake dust contacting the metal. I had heard of using vaseline on wheels for quite a while but this was the first time I had seen it in a Porsche owner manual. |

my '87 owners manual states to use petroleum jelly on entire wheel. black inner and polished outer. follow the following directions to the letter.............get 6 pack of your favorite barley pops. open one, look at huge jar of vaseline, drink beer remembering when you were young and not married and what you could do with the jar w/your old girlfriend, take handful of vaseline and wipe over entire wheel. everywhere! take slug on barley pop, ask yourself what the hell am i doing, reread owners manual and assure yourself you read it right, take nice smooth diaper type cloth and rub vigourously! do this 3 more times. stand back, finish off barley pops and admire your work! works perfect and i was skeptical also. plus dust wipes right off easily and as a value added bonus...................ITS CHEAP!

While nowhere near as fun as the description by Charles, here is what the 87 manual says:
