Replacing ignition wires w/aftermarket - is it necessary to provide wire supports?
My '87 Carrera's OEM ignition wires are being replaced with Clewett wires. I've noticed the stock wires seem to have supports and separators built-into the assembly. How do you support and separate the new wires to keep them from rubbing against everything and wearing? Or is it really necessary? I notice the Clewett wires have a fabric reinforcement sheathing. Maybe that protects the insulation from wear due to rubbing?
Thanks! |

Was planning to change the wires today and hoped to get an answer about this too.

I used Magnecores on my '87 with the factory supports and separators.
I had to slightly enlarge the factory holes for the larger wires.

movin: Yes, you want to make sure that the ignition wires (And any other wires) are kept away from heat and rubbing.
Don't let them touch any of the engine parts that get very hot. You can get seperators from Napa etc.

All you really need to do is to drill out the stock separators to ever so slightly less than the diameter of the new wires and bolt them back as you found them.
After removing them from the motor, snap them back together so you can use the stock opening/tunnel as a guide hole. Drill slowly, though, and use a sharp bit to avoid cracking. Works great, takes less than five minutes total.

Thanks, I thought the OEM separators were bonded to the original wires, I'll re-use them after drilling out.

Can you guys define what it means to drill out the separators. I'm looking at getting some new Magnacores but it sounds like they may have some fitment issues. Thanks

The black plastic "holders" for the ignition wires are slightly too small for Magnecor wires. With the wires removed, use a drill bit to enlarge the holes that the wires run through.

No problem running without separators as the clewetts have thick shielding and the added heat sheathing. I have run mine with MSD components and no arcing or other issues.
