capacities of '72 and 964 oil tanks? / Expansion of '72 tank...

Guys - anyone have nearby data on the relative capacities of the 1972 oil tank vs. the 964 tank?

Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, have any of you expanded the capacity of the 1972 tank? We are looking at doing that here in the shop, but wanted to probe the common (or uncommon) wisdom for the BTDT experiences...

TIA!

I would also like to know some info on this .... Since I am putting a 3.6 into my 72.
I am pretty sure the way to go is to enlarge the 72 tank VS the 964 tank . Thats what I think jack did on BB2.

Call Jerry woods inter. @408-369-9607

they use a vender that adds two QTs oil capacity to the stock tank, and they baffle it for $490. plus an additional 135. for ultasonic cleaning if you so desire

TRE Motorsports did exactly that for my car. It's a 1972 with a 964 motor, and they did a belt cut and expansion on the '72 tank to increase capacity by almost two quarts.

Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of it.

It might be a good idea to add some baffles at the same time.

I don't think the Jerry Woods mod is for 72 tanks. You would have to do a custom mod. It looks to me like you couldn't make the tank much deeper or it would interfere with the torsion bars. Maybe Jack can shed some light on that problem. I use a stock 72 tank on a 3 litre motor with no problems. Others in my Toyo Spec group also use stock 72 tanks. The 72 seems to be better than the other year tanks because it tapers down at the bottom and leaves little room for oil to slosh away from the outlet.

I'm sure it would be better to have a bigger tank but you may find the stock 72 is good enough. I keep mine full to the anti-foam screen, this is about 1/2 quart over full on the dipstick.

If your car runs slicks or big wings you may need a better tank to handle the G's.

This info might be in the oil tank thread from a month or 2 ago.

Andy - we were thinking similar - in terms of suspension interference.

Jack - would love some pictures, if possible!

will search for that thread...

Fabcar did the oil tank expansion on my '73 RSR Clone. They welded in an extra section that lengthened the tank by about 2 inches and they added internal baffles.

My whole system hold something like 12-13 quarts now.

Let me know if anyone wants a better pic of the modification. I'll have the car on the lift to put in the Pagid Orange pads for the DE at the Glen this week.

Slightly off your topic keith....

Does a 3.6 in a 72 with twin oil coolers really need to have the oil tank mod.

If I could get by like Andy suggested "over filling" that would be OK with me .

Anybody know a sure answer?

Here's some more pics of my RSR oil tank as modified by Fabcar. I believe Smart Racing does the same type of mod.

The tank has been lengthened by 2 inches and internal baffling has been added to eliminate oil starvation during hard braking and cornering.

The problem with the '72 tank is that under very hard braking the oil is pushed away from the oil pump in the long line leading forward to the oil tank. Over filling will work up to a point, but the G's under braking with slicks may be too much. I had a rod bearing failure when using slicks on a track car with a stock longblock 3.2 driven very hard on a track with a long downhill hard braking zone following a long left hander. If I had cross drilled the crank this may not have happened.

After that experience, I decided not to take any more chances. The motor that was built has a cross drilled crank and a '74 style Fabcar extended and baffled tank and GT3RS oil pump - no problems so far. The line leading from the tank to pump is now much larger and shorter and in the right direction.

Randy,
I've always thought the same thing (about the oil sloshing away from the pickup if its mounted fwd of the engine). But, all the big time 911 racecars I've seen use an oil tank in the smuglers box up front and they are definately on big-arse slicks.
