Breif intro and an undercarriage question
I have been lurking around for about 3 months and took the 911SC plunge about a month ago. After a bit of looking I found a local original owner, low miles '79SC no sunroof Coupe and it passed the PPI with flying colors and the rest, as they say is history.
For those who might be interested... All original, metallic silver, chrome trim, leather interior including the dash, and cookie cutters that are in need of some help. ![]() I have done the obligatory wax job, engine oil and transmission oil change, and now want clean up the undercarriage. The underside panels, wheel wells, oil tank and just about every hardline and hose is covered in what appears to be a creosote (black, thick and oily) rust proofer and 27 years worth of brown grime. The engine, heat exchangers and muffler are spared. In some spots it is flaking, others it is soft, but in most areas it is stuck on good. While in GA since '83 this was purchased in NJ. Before I go and do something I might regret, I have a few questions. 1. Does this sound like normal but dirty factory cosmoline or an aftermarket dealer job? 2. Should/Can I remove it without damage or a significant risk of future rust? (I want to.) 3. Any suggestions besides elbow grease, 303 concentrate or Simple Green, and a pressure washer? I am not looking for a concourse winner but I do want a bit of a garage queen and I am willing to do the work for it. I would appreciate any input. -John |

Welcome to Pelican Fox. Looks pretty nice! It's my favorite color too. You will probably be encouraged to get yourself some nice Fuchs, They would look great on your ride. I actually don't mind cookies. I'm not sure if I can answer your questions but I think I read a post several weeks ago dealing with the same topic. Might try a search for undercoating. Again, congratulations on the queen.

Hey John! You mean you want your metallic silver 911 wheelwells to look like this?
![]() Perhaps your cookie-cutters to look like this? ![]() I put together a project journal on how I cleaned-up my 911 including all the products and techniques used... perhaps it might be of some help getting started: My 911 Project Journal |

If the stuff has been applied to the oil tank and all the hoses and lines, that doesn't sound like a factory job. More likely a later application of 'schutz' or worse.
At best, someone's attempt to preserve things; at worst, a cover-up for ??? Hope it's the former... nice looking car, by the way --John |
