MSD conversion 84-930 turbo
does the original CDI box introduce any timing changes or is it completely passive, only used to produce the spark.

It is completely passive -- all timing modification is done by the distributor altering the reluctor relationship to the pickup coil mounted to distributor body. There is a centrifugal advance mechanism and vacuum/boost retard module inside the distributor.
