sway bar mount instalation

Hi, any one have any ideas on making the installation of the sway bar mounts to the chassis with the cover plate any easier. I already cross threaded one side and had to re-tap it. Does not seem to align very well and one side of the bar seems to be about 1.5 - 2 inches from the chassis mount while the other side rests against the mount. Is this all due to sway bar alignment in the bushings? The car is a 77 911. Don't seem to be a good design to me. If I was an auto designer, and I am not, I would have separate bolt mounts for the cover plate. Thanks Jerry

It looks like nobody really understand your problem and got no reply. I would like to help but cannot fully comprehend how the misalignment could be that great (1.5 to 2.0 inches). Could you post some pictures? Thanks.

Unfortunately I won't be able to take pictures until this weekend. However what seem to be happening is that the sway bay, for whatever reason, is pulling itself out of one side of the a-arm bushing slightly on one side causing that side to be somewhat lower and out of allignment with the bolt hole and mount. I think what I have to do is push hard on the one side inward to push the bar through the bushing furher and at the same time jack up the bar on that side outside the area of the cover plate so I can bolt it in place? thanks Jerry

Did you jack one side of the car up during the reinstall process? I did when attempting to get the bar back in. This unsettled the suspension giving similar problem to yours, the ends of the bar were in the rubbers but one of the midlle mounts would not line up. I jacked the othe side up and released it down again and everything lined up.
I did the job without releasing the A- arms.

I don't think I understand the question, but, if one side of the car is in the air, and ther other on the ground, nothing will line up on the sway bar! get both sides up in the air, then jack up each wheel hub to ride height and install. Proper sway bars come with adjustable end links to avoid jacking effects.

Hi, the car is jacked up in the front supported by jack stands under the belly pan. Did a front end rebuild. The sway bar was installed into both bushings on the a-arms. the a-arms are presently at the lowest level- Have not adjusted ride hight yet with adjuster screws. I was going to install the inner sway bar mounts along with the skid plate but the mounts really don't allign with the bolt holes that well. Also I have noticed that one sway bar end has moved out of the a-arm bushing slightly on one side(still has about 1/2 " protruding) while the other side may be 1- 1.5 " protruding. The side that has the 1-1.5 " protrusion the mount on that side sits down about 1.5-2 " from the belly pan and requires much force to lift it to try to insert the bolt into the chassis. Can' t imagine trying to align the holes in the skid plate with the mount holes with the threaded hole in the chassis. I am guessing that I needed to get the sway bar better aligned in the a-arm bushings, jack both a-arms to more ride level and see if the holes align better. If so then install the skid plate, release the jacks from the a-arms and then set ride hight. Does this sound reasonable? I hope this clarrifies the situation. Does anyone have any better ideas, Thanks Jerry
