Can I use Hammerite instead of POR15??
I have found some rust under my pedal cluster which I want to treat etc whilst I am working on the pedal cluster. I am firstly finding it hard to find someone who stocks POR15 in Sweden, and secondly find the shelf life and cost of Hammerite (http://www.hammerite.com/uk/index.html) to be more appropriate? I have used Hammerite several times in the past, but never POR15. As far as I can read on the internet, they do the same thing!! And views would be greatly appreciated

This is what I use: ![]() "Owatrol can be used to combat rust wherever it occurs, penetrating deeply to stabilise the rust and prevent it reforming. Because of Owatrol’s ‘wetting’ properties, it penetrates through the rust to the sound metal, driving out any moisture and air; filling the rust pores with oil. Owatrol bonds with the rust to form a flexible protective coating which may be painted over without further preparation" http://www.owatrol.com/ The Owatrol dries to a semi-hard finish. Once it dries you can paint over it with oil based paint. Mix the paint with 20% Owatrol for best results. Gloss black from Biltema works well. Use a wire brush on the rusted area first.

Owatrol sounds like a great product for body cavity protection, whether already a bit rusty, or to prevent any form starting.
But, to seal off rust to prevent it from reactivating, the theory goes that no O2 should ever see the rust. In that context, epoxy paint would do the same job as POR 15, which I think is a single component polyurethane. I've used Hammerite and I found it to be an excellent synthetic enamel, that's all. No where did I get the impression one could coat active rust that can't be totally removed in a practical sense with Hammerite and stop the rust from continuing. |

And then they have these to use first: .- Rust Remover Gel - http://www.hammerite.com/uk/products/ps_rust_remover_gel.html .- Kurust - http://www.hammerite.com/uk/products/ps_kurust.html I was going to use the Rust Remover Gel and then the Direct To Rust Metal Paint. Might also use a bit of Ove's Owatrol ![]()

Hammerite probably contains some chemicals which don't mix well with the Owatrol oil. Besides Hammerite should contact the rusted metal surface directly to perform as intended. I prefer the Owatrol + oil paint combination over Hammerite because i find the Hammerite finish almost too hard. It chips more easily, and if it does, water/moisture can get in under the surface. In other words not what you want for painting the underbody of your 911, but it should be fine for interior use. Here's a pic of my car. The entire underbody is painted with Owatrol, then oil paint ![]() ![]() Good luck, and remember to get the $15 brass bushing set for your pedal cluster. I have just done it myself. Easy work once you get the clutch pedal pin out.

I'd skip the POR all together. I prefer to treat the rust with phosphoric acid (or you chemical of choice) and paint over with a lighter color paint. That way I'm able to see any rust that may be coming back. With POR you're assuming your rust is gone but you'll never know for sure what's under that black goo.

I think that the Owetrol is the same stuff as Flood's Penetrol, just marketed in the US under a different name. Flood also makes the Deks Olje for wooden boats.

NOTHING....is better than POR15 to cover and seal rust......NOTHING.
Pay the extra money for POR and do it right.

![]() But as I understand it the shelf life on POR15 is not as good as Hammerite once it has been opened, and I only need a small amount at the moment. Additionally the cost is a lot higher than Hammerite as well?

A small can of POR15 goes a long way. A bit more expensive, yes.
I recommend the "starter kit". Buy the small cans if you don't plan on using a lot in a near future and store them in the freezer. I don't like Hammerite so much, the rust comes back after a while. I'm don't know fore sure if POR is better yet, a guess time will tell.

I've put Hammerite and some other products on a rusty piece of metal and left it outside for 6 months. Hammerite shows rust coming through (both No1 primer and No1primer+Hammerite paint). Some of the other products fared quite well, with one giving the best results (RX-series, probably only available here in The Netherlands, but could well be POR equivalent)
