9" Fuchs used , what are the odds
I have an 85 carrera. I want some wider rubber. My plan is to through the 8 inch fuchs that are on the back now on to the front and buy some used 9 inch fuchs for the back.
Can I do this? Should I do this? and if so, what are the odds of finding some 9 inch fuchs cheap. haven't seen any.

If the 8" fuchs are the 911 offset (10.6mm) version there is no way you're going to run them on the front of an SC or Carrera.
If you have 951 8" fuchs then its possible. |

An 85 Carrera didn't come with 8-inch Fuchs in the first place.

There is a 8X16 that will fit the Carrera (rear only) and a 944 turbo 8X16 that will fit the front but the Carrera rear won't fit the front and the 944 rear won't work on the rear of a 911.
Unless you have massive HP why go to bigger wheels and tires...you are adding weight especially unsprung weight and will go slower. You also may have more problems in wet or icy conditions. |

hi....my 86 has 7s in front and 9s in the rear. The look great. The previous owner paid about $700 each wheel or so. The 9s are pretty rare and Ive had a number of people make offers to buy them from me but I dont plan on selling. Maybe you can find a cheap pair that can be refinished.

my plan was to go up a step in rim size and down a step in tire size, reducing the amount sidewall stick out past the rim....I wouldn't think weight would be that much different....thats why I'ma asking...thanks

Chances are your car has the stock 6 & 7x16's. The 7's will work up front (but probably not w/ the 225/50r16 tires you likely have on them now.) |

check out the following wheel chart and check part numbers, that will tell you wat you have...
http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars/WheelWts.html and for the record, mine are 951 8's and 9's.

Jeremy, looks good...my point is it is hard to really use up the existing tires and wheels. If you change the suspension to nutralize oversteer you can have good handling and less weight. I would say a 7X8 would be good but why go 8X9 without big power?

yeah, I hear where you are coming from. Bigger wheels/more rubber allow you to stop better, corner better all those sort of things. for the street, yes, probably overkill - for the track - wouldn't have it any other way...

Does anyone here think that they have mastered their car to the point that a couple extra pounds of wheel weights is going to make even a noticable difference? FI cars with professional drivers, perhaps. Novices at DE's, no. Go with the biggest tires you can fit.

But the same argument could be reversed - no one here (or few at most) are actually taking advantage of all the rubber they have to the point where they'd need more.
Just playing devil's advocate. I get jealous whenever I read the "twin plugged" part of your sig.

16 inch tires are hard to come by wider than 245s....and an 8 will do that fine. If your really want go to 9s, try a cup or a 964 wheel....but you'll need spacers. The 245 will work on a 9 as well.....

In my case, with SO-3's, when I went from a 225 to a 245 on my 8 inch rims, the car felt really squirly (to me). I hated it. I went back to the 225's a week later and felt relieved when the handling returned to what I considered to be normal.
I could definitely feel the sidewall squirming on the 8 inch rim. 245's really belong on 9's in my opinion, even though I know a lot of guys use the bigger tires on the smaller rims. If you can find the 9 inch rims for a decent price, go for it. I couldn't. |
