Cutting air diverter for internal voltage regulator

I am in the process of changing the alternator on my '75 911S to the internally regulated Valeo unit sold by our host. In order to do this, the air diverter has to be notched so that the regulator will fit.

Does the portion where the regulator and diverter meet need to be tight, or can the hole/notch be a bit oversized? I ask this because I cut the notch in the diverter without allowing for the fan housing. This caused the notch to be a bit deeper than necessary.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Well, deed is done. Just monitor temps carefully for awhile to make sure it did not significantly diverted much need air flow over the cylinder heads.

Lucky we are headed towards winter, but spring and summer keep an eye on it.

My 2 cents,

FOr extra measure, make sure the top of the cylinders are free of debris. I recently opened my alternator for service and there were caked on dust/debris on top of the cylinders, I don't know how the #6 was cooling with all the debris.

Dane,

When I replaced the VR on our '86, I had to cut a notch in the diverter
to accomodate the larger replacement VR.

As I recall, it was about 2" X 2".

I think you're OK, but post a pic for additional comments from other members.

Dr Gerry,

Which VR did you put in? I am planning to change mine due to wear.

Jim

Seriously doubt that will be a problem.
