Okie dokie..progess...

Okay, I believe I found the source of my troubles. Inside the first pic (where the input shaft goes), were the remains of some disintegrated piece of something. Grinding in there like sand in a CV joint...I am not sure what disintegrated though because this is the first time I have seen any of these parts.

Inside here I pulled out a bunch of

these little varmints

And here's the back of the nose deal thingy on the flywheel...maybe it came from here.

as per usual, any and all advice is mucho appreciato.

Those are needle bearings that have broken up. They come from the bearing you are pointing at in the picture.

Kurt,

Last pic could be in better focus, but it looks to me as though many of the needles have fallen out and, as Kurt V pointed out ... are now laying about in much smaller pieces than when they left the factory! I suspect that the grinding noise you heard was the process that made little particles out of those needles!

Let's not be modest Warren! I want to give credit where it is due. You made this diagnosis in the original thread even before any evidence was presented!

Kurt,

Good job getting things together. I'm of no help regarding the broken asbestos, but I'm sure you won't have a problem getting your car done soon. I did have a heck of a time getting the shift rod that comes out of the front of the tranny to go back through the hole to meet up with shifter on the floor of the back seats.

Good luck on the installation, let us know how things went!

Dave

Try searching for Pilot Bearing

For those that cringe at the sound of an electric can opener, coffee grinder, or Waring Blender ... I can't imagine 'only' calling the noise a Big Bang! For however long Kurt endured that noise, it had to be far, far worse than scraping fingernails on chalkboard!

No big bang...maybe there was that first day it went weird on me and I could no longer shift. After that, just grinding when I released the pedal and the clutch began to grab the flywheel.

Engine is in the car now. That was not fun. God dang cv joints were constantly in the way on one side; and in fact, the inner joint came off and fell apart, one bearing at a time.

I don't know if I can reuse that joint if the bearings each fell 2' onto the pavement. Probably best if I don't ( I have a spare).

Trying to get it all sorted. I accidentally ripped a hose in the back. And I have the right inner CV joint to replace.
Plus...there' a pair of wires dangling that...took several hit points of damage (2d6+1)...
And I hope I didn't bend the shift rod...it's tough to do...now I would know exactly what to do, but this was the first reinstall, and I failed to do some obvious things (like jack up the tranny after the shift rod is in the tube to get it some support) but we'll see how it all works out in the end. I'll hook up the cable and stuff tomorrow and see if I can shift. If that's a go, then it'll be a joy to sort out the other issues.

Okay, that was a good learning experience. I'm back up and running now...test drove it down the street. Smooth clutch. Need to put the bumper back on, and hook up a few electrical connections, and double check everything, but otherwise, everything is good.

Thanks.

Kurt,

Great job. Glad yours is up and running. Mine is not. I have a weird sound/vibration from 2000 rpm and up. I have no idea what is wrong. I checked to see if all cylinders were firing and they appear to be. I have no idea what is wrong or what to do. And, no my other car is dead with a worn out ignition switch. I'm not having good luck with cars at the moment.

Dave

Hmm..that sucks. Vibration, but it idles just fine eh?
Engine vibration or transmission vibration?

my remaining issues:
-----------
When I brake, the pedal pushes back a little as the wheels turn--as though I have a warped rotor. Weird. I don't think it's new as much as I think I didn't get the brake booster hose fully tightened down and maybe the warpage is becoming apparent.
But I also used the emergency brake cables to hold the drive shafts up (which didn't work out too well), and maybe that had an effect.

I also do not have backup lights. I thought the wires that go on the nose of the transmission were okie dokie...but maybe the bastards came out, and that's just not fixable at this point. No way I'm pulling all that crap out again just for back up lights.
-------------

Don't think I've experienced vibration before. Maybe you didn't get the motor mounts on there right or something; if you washed, the engine down, maybe there's water in the distributor;
Maybe one of the electrical connectors isn't flush; vacuum leak somewhere? I'm just tossing out ideas, obviously.
