Think yer a tuner? Predict the dyno result!

So here's the challenge... I'm going to spend Friday afternoon at the dyno shop with my newly rebuilt 82 SC with a 930 engine. Guess what the peak rear wheel horsepower and torque levels we'll see. Winner gets a choice of prizes:

1) totally stock 930 wastegate spring (~.8 bar) or
2) rear window defroster relay (I've got a cabriolet:) )

Winner must claim prize within 200 years of contest ending. Shipping not included. Employees of Carolina AutoMasters Dyno shop not eligible for contest. Batteries extra.

Some information to guide your guesses:

- Dynojet dyno
- 1978 3.3 930 engine
- reused the 930 pistons and cylinders
- an Ollie's line-bored shuffle-pinned case
- ARP head studs and rod bolts
- twin-plugged, ported, polished & flowed heads
- full balancing
- 8:1 compression ratio
- 964 cams
- 3.2 Carrera intake
- 50# fuel injectors (attention junior tuners, this is the wild card)
- single Bosch front mounted fuel pump (unknown fuel pressure)
- K27-7200 turbo
- GoingSuperFast full-bay intercooler
- B&B headers
- twin EDIS-6 ignition controllers and coil packs
- NGK Iridium spark plugs (BKR7EIX)
- Megasquirt II v 3.0 ECU controlling fuel and spark
- front fender mounted 36 row oil cooler w/fan
- 1 bar peak boost in third gear
- straight-thru muffler - 3" outlet
- 915 transmission
- cool collar (ok, I made that part up just to see if you're still with me)

I'm scheduled for 2:00 pm tomorrow and assuming "bad things" don't happen, I'll post the results tomorrow night. You have until then to enter the contest. Let the games begin!

First off I think you're going to need more cooling...

My guess on the Dynojet you'll be at 375 at the rear wheels.

1fastredsc 07-06-2006 02:37 PM

I say 400RWHP. BTW, with your EDIS setup, how did you fit the 36-1 tooth wheel on your setup?

Nashville84Cab 07-06-2006 02:40 PM

Nice setup! I don't consider myself a turner, but I'll pull some numbers out of the hat... 450 at the wheel? Probably low balled it. Good luck at the dyno.

sammyg2 07-06-2006 02:47 PM

405 rwhp

brendon 07-06-2006 02:48 PM

387.2 peak hp at 6500rpm
362.0 peak torque at 3275rpm

Is this like the Price is Right - highest without going over?

Nice spec sheet.

jtkkz 07-06-2006 03:07 PM

350

dean 07-06-2006 03:52 PM

Do you say the size of the motor? Is it a 3.3L. And what dyno are you running it on. It makes a hugh diff.

dean 07-06-2006 03:54 PM

Woops Dynojet. Man I wish I could read.

I am going to guess 420 RWHP

hobieboy 07-06-2006 04:10 PM

465 rwhp...

randywebb 07-06-2006 04:12 PM

268 PS

mppickett 07-06-2006 05:53 PM

1fastredsc - Mike, for the EDIS trigger I picked up the pulley with the VR wheel from Albert at goingsuperfast. Here's a pic:
http://pickettweb.com/Porsche/pulley.jpg

Brendon, let's not use the Price is Right rules, closest wins whether you're above or below. As you can tell, this is just for fun. Anyone can race dyno sheets but it takes real guts to win at the track;) And just so you know, since I'm more of a wrench type and the car is a cabriolet, I race dyno sheets :D

Randywebb, have you been out partaking at the Country Fair? What the heck is 268 PS? By the way, Marianne and I once saw the Flying Karamozov Brothers lead a totally nude marching band out of the Grove at the Country Fair (early 80's - no joke). Come to think of it, that was the last time I saw a totally nude marching band...

Here's another pic to help increase the accuracy of folks guesses (the Speed Yellow paint is worth at least 2.7 horsepower and 4 ft/lbs of torque, right?).

YermanCars 07-06-2006 05:53 PM

409rwhp.
Your going to need a new trans soon.

YermanCars 07-06-2006 05:56 PM

Just to give you an idea.

http://media.ams-evo8.com/videos/amsmisc/PorscheDynoRun.wmv

This is @ 16 psi but the intercooler was heatsoaked so I lost about 10-15rwhp

Yeah, I think you're right (about the trans). Nice video. You've got a real monster there.

JeremyD 07-06-2006 06:24 PM

389 and within a year you will need a new 915

YermanCars 07-06-2006 06:27 PM

I had the 915, when the car was making 360rwhp and it took 3 months before she blew.

Now I have a 930 short bellhousing trans, just changed the clutch disk and added more clamping force to the pressure plate.

We should be going to the dyno again- looking for 550+rwhp.

There are many factors, to gaining hp, first is tuning, fuel, turbo, intercooler and headers.

Quality of the product.(will it last?)

Anyhow, good luck.

488.4RWHP
465lb-ft

what muffler are u running...i could have just missed it...anyways my guess assumes a good free flowing muffler....

A free flowing resonator.

1fastredsc 07-06-2006 06:42 PM

Thanks mppickett, i didn't know anyone made the 36-1 wheel for the 911. I think that the final straw in deciding to use an EDIS module and coils for my MSNS-E setup. thanks again

I don't know the muffler (here's a pic below in case someone else does). It is totally open inside - I think the previous owner gutted it. It doesn't do much muffling and I suspect backpressure isn't an issue.

herman maire 07-06-2006 06:51 PM

It really depends on how much boost your gonna run.....I would say
425HP at the crank.

mppickett 07-06-2006 07:03 PM

I'm shooting for 1 bar boost in 3rd gear.

herman maire 07-06-2006 07:09 PM

I look forward to seeing how long the trans lasts.
I would like to keep my 915 in my future 3.6 turbo in my 72 but I keep hearing it will blow.

Hope she holds.

mppickett 07-06-2006 07:22 PM

I agree. I really like the 915. I'm actually pretty easy on the trans in terms of shock (I don't drop the clutch or power shift). I do think the torque is going to catch up with it sooner or later, though. Rarlyl8 has had pretty good luck with his if I'm not mistaken.

sewell94 07-06-2006 07:47 PM

my guess at 15lbs is 417 hp , now to get nitpicky are the numbers gonna be sae corrected hp or observed?? :)

mppickett 07-06-2006 08:00 PM

I was going to report SAE corrected numbers for the purpose of the contest. Elevation of the dyno is around 350 above sea level and the temperature tomorrow should be in the low 80's. The weather is supposed to be partly cloudy. I suspect that there won't be much difference between SAE corrected and raw DynoJet numbers.

klein930 07-06-2006 08:57 PM

My guess is 395 hp

Boxster Rod 07-06-2006 09:01 PM

427 hp
403 ft-lbs

I'll take the stock wastegate spring. ;)

-Rod

porschett 07-06-2006 09:02 PM

Oh, I know, I know, Oh Oh SmileWavy...

Very similar setup from mine except you got the EFI goodies and twin plug. Since mine on a DynoJet 249C got 403 RWHP/390 RW Torque, I say you should be somewhere around 440.233 RWHP and 440.245 RW torque +- .001 ;)

During my dyno run, I filled my tank with VP MS109 just to be safe :D

Make sure you have a big a** fan blowing in the back and maybe put a big cardboard tilted 45 degree deflecting air down to the IC.

randywebb 07-06-2006 09:02 PM

PS is a measure of Power used in Germany for awhile...

No OCF for me this year and I hope that is not the same Marianne who has an office next to mine...

Since you didn't like the PS units I will change my guess (estimate) to -- let's see now --

73980.35 calories/sec.

And if you don't like that one, then how about...

3.0959 * 10^12 ergs/sec ?

masraum 07-06-2006 09:33 PM

My guess is between 350 and 375 for hp at the wheels.

kycarguy 935 07-06-2006 09:36 PM

415hp is my guess.
392 torque.

I accept your 73980.35 calories/sec estimate (just slightly higher than my own estimate). Not the same Marianne. I followed mine out there when she went to UofO and then followed her back to NC. Eugene was a great place to live and you have all of those nice mountain roads close by.

briankeithsmith 07-07-2006 05:32 AM

Where are you located Mike? And where are you getting the dyno tuning done?

Good luck!

I'm in Concord.

Just wondering how far away you are...

Brian

mppickett 07-07-2006 06:14 AM

Hi Brian,
I'm over in Durham. I usually use Jeff Creech over at Carolina Auto Masters for dyno work. He's a Corvette guy but he's really good to work with :)

wholberg 07-07-2006 06:22 AM

427.5 ft-lbs of torgue with 432.5 HP

beepbeep 07-07-2006 07:02 AM

389 bhp. With other words, around 354hp at wheels.

930Turbolader 07-07-2006 11:09 AM

1 bar boost and 50 lbs injectors will be the limiting factor here......I'm gonna say 460 rwhp with around 425 lbs/ft of torque.

81 930 07-07-2006 11:17 AM

If using a DynoJet 248C, I'll say 445 RWHP and 420 RWTQ.
